Some of you may have noted that two weeks ago I posted how bummed I was that my employer installed a DNS filter and most of my favorite sites to visit on lunch breaks (THR included) were blocked.....

Well I'm happy to report that through the application of some strategy and tactics and a dash of human psychology, I got the IT guy to clear the "weapons" category.

Let's face it....when your company trucks say "Military and Industrial Packaging" on them, blocking weapons sites doesn't make a lot of sense.

But I knew my opportunity would eventually come and fortunately it was sooner than later.

We had a job come up to do custom foam case inserts for the USCG. The case has foam trays that hold some very small looking AR uppers. (Much shorter than the M4. I think they may actually be 9mm for CQC in a confined shipboard environment).

We did a very similar job for them a few months back when they were shipping M4 uppers and I managed to pull some CAD files off of AR-15.com that saved me some time.

Now I had a "legitimate need" and this "bothersome blocking software" was preventing me from doing my job... :)

Mr. IT had told me previously just to e-mail him the names of any sites I needed white flagged. So I tactfully let him know why I needed AR15.com cleared, and then listed a couple of our customers sites that were also blocked (Sig, Bushmaster, etc...)

Then the "sneak attack" .... a direct appeal to human lazyness.....

"so do you want me to keep sending these to you one at a time, or would you rather just clear the category that seems to be causing the problem?"

Five minutes later, Victory was mine! :D

Than you Dilbert for teaching me the subtleties of office psychology. :neener:

Can you get the company to buy you a tax stamp and some short-barreled AR uppers to "assure quality compatibility" as well? :)

umm how can an AR upper be shorter than normal? The pin holes have to be in the same places or it won't go on the lower. Got more details?

I think he meant it was a shorter barrel.

When you consider that 9+2+2+7.5 does not equal 20, you can appreciate why I don't start my design work untill I get better info.

Also, that doesn't look like a 9" handguard to me, but it's hard to tell.

The odd part is that the kit we're designing the case insert for is to have pockets for 5" 9mm barrels (presumably M9 barrels) along with pockets for standard size M16 mags.

These are for the Coast Guard and our best guess is that these cases are going to be "shipboard, mobile armorers kit" where one of the ship's sailors (likely a gunners mate) will swap out uppers, mags and barrels and then send the old ones back to port for service in a "proper armory".

Any how...these type projects are always fun to do. It's our little contribution to the defense of this nation and we do our level best to make them work right the first time. I wish I could say the same for the sales dweebs that interface directly with the customer.

Well since it takes normal mags we can rule out 9mm. Maybe it's something cool like .450 Bushmaster or something mundane like 5.56x45. Either way it's still pretty cool.
