What is the difference between a standard primer and a mag primer? Is the mag "hotter"?

Yes.

Longer duration & bigger flame.

Go to the CCI web site and read about primers.

Magnum primers often contain aluminum dust. Upon primer ignition, the hot metal dust fills the case and helps ignite powders that are difficult to ignite. Certain manufacturers may also put metal dust in their standard primers. (Just a guess, but I would surmise that this may be the kind of thing that makes Winchester LP primers both standard and magnum.)

That was one of the reason I asked. I have never really know the difference in my ~30 years of reloading but I do know there are two different types then all of a sudden I see Winchester is making a "one size fits all"!!!!!
