AT: Victim Disarmament Zone

Recently found what is possibly one of the dumbest victim disarmament zones yet. While hiking along the Appalachian Trail, I came to a posted sign as I got within a couple miles of Skyline Drive. What is one of the prohibited items? Surprise, surprise, firearms of all types. Now, does it strike anybody else as very stupid to not allow people to arm themselves in a remote area, with no roads nearby, no way for cops to drive up to the rescue, no way to call for help anyway, and nobody anywhere close to help in any shape or form?

Personally, I find this to be even more stupid than disarming people in public areas. Police would have to run on foot for a good while after a long drive in the first place, just to get to the incident. That is assuming they would be informed of it, when there aren't any phones nearby, and cell-phone reception is questionable, if not outright impossible in many areas.

So what is the excuse for this one? Just call the police won't work this time. Run to a public area? Just a few miles run, on winding, sometimes rough terrain, no biggie. Must be a would be rapist/mugger/murderer paradise. Yay for public safety!

They don't give a flying you know what about your safety. They just want to make rules. Do what you have to do.

Well, i'm trying to assume the best about these people, so maybe it's because they don't want people plinking up there incase of leaving a mess behind or a stray bullet hitting someone?

Stupid? Yes, but more to the point, it's a classic example of government wielding authority purely for the sake of wielding authority.

This may be an administrative rule, not a law. If so, the less they know the better. Safepacker for me.

Um, Guys: don't forget the trail is a national park, and the NPS enforces whatever section of the Code of Federal Regulations it is that prohibits firearms in all NPs. Get caught and wind up in Federal Court.

Get caught and wind up in Federal Court.

Some legal advice:

Don't get caught.

i 2nd that sound legal advise, but i'd still be way more comfortable in a place like that with a 45/70 mountain carbine on my back..
