I have decided to snag a CMP M-1 before they're gone and must choose between SA and HRA Service Grade offerings. I am looking for the best shooter, not collectors' piece.

Has anyone any argument for or against either?

I have both an HRA and several SAs. Also, I was at the South Store just last weekend. If you are looking primarily for a shooter, the HRAs service grades with the new stocks can't be beat. They look almost new. All of them are mixmasters, so you probably will end up with some SA parts. Now, this isn't meant to take anything away from the SAs. I have one of those that was a Danish return with a VAR barrel. I refer to it as my shooter. Either way you will be happy, I just think the new CMP stock and metal give you a nice platform to work with.

Just my 2 cents.

The HRAs were supposedly a bit better made; although by the time they get to us through CMP, they're not exactly new anymore. But the HRA I got was darned nice.

Just had my mixmaster "minus wood" SA shooter out the other day. It's come quite a way since I opened the box, though, and has a new barrel plus mods. The old warhorses sure can prance when curried properly and fed the right diet.

I like Springfields because they have the tradition and were making Garands during the war.
