This thread's going to be a winner.

With that set of parameters, I'd say buy them all.

What's your price range? What's the use requirements?

October 5, 2008, 11:40 AM
I prefer Oranges to Apples.

I choose M1A, simply 'cause it is bigger. :)

October 5, 2008, 11:44 AM
M1A; already have a couple of the others.

Price range is probably max of about $1100 (not set in stone or anything) and mainly for range shooting, possibly some varmint (if 223) and maybe deer or antelope with the 308.

Not really sure yet :)

If you want to shoot anything bigger than a poodle go with the M1A.

Have heard very good things about SA's customer service as well.

Do you think that IF obama gets elected, that when his gun ban goes into effect, it would make an M1A tougher to obtain?

(This from the big AK endorser)........GET THE AR !! Less expensive rifle, .223 ammo is considerably less expensive than .308. It's more than sufficiently lethal for home defense,SHTF,zombies, yes, even poodles.( maybe especially poodles )

October 5, 2008, 12:17 PM
Yeah that's kinda what I'm thinking too.....but which one? I know there's so many out there to choose: DPMS, Olympic, Charles Daly, Colt, Bushmaster, just to name a few.

October 5, 2008, 12:30 PM
Colt sets the standard!

I figure a blue and walnut, traditional stock M1A is a lot more likely to survive the coming Obama gun ban than any evil black rifle.

Buy the AR now while you still can, hopefully you can get the M1A or at least a reasonable facsimile later.

AR, Charles Daly.

I chose AR15 but the M1A is a great rifle as well. The great thing about the AR is how modular it is. Buying a new upper can change the whole use of the rifle and they can ship right to your house.

It wont be a good choice for deer hunting but for HD, there is little better.

For about 1100, I would choose one of the bigger names like Colt, Bushmaster or Armalite.

I dont care for the Sig myself, but its purely on the feel of the rifle. I have not heard anything bad about them.

dont have a sig and aint looking to drop $1500 to rectify the situation.
while the h-bar (1/7) plays well at 500-600 yards and can reach out to 1000, the 308 is more powerfuler and less affected by wind at the 1000.

October 5, 2008, 03:27 PM
M1a1 because it doesn't jam and the .308 tends to kill bugs dead.

October 5, 2008, 03:37 PM
look into a robinson xcr. i know its not on your list, but its not terribly expensive compared to the ones you have mentioned and you can easily convert calibers etc. i would at least get this over most ar variants, though it might be outdone by an m1a in 308, at the very least it wont be as good as the m1a past 400 yrds, but then again the need to shoot 400+ yards will likely never present itself in practical use, and if that is a requirement for this rifle only the m1a will really suit this need well.

October 5, 2008, 03:40 PM
oh, i forgot...if you are really dead set on a (somewhat?) true ar variant, look at the hk 416 if you can find one...i think the civilian models are going by the name hk 415 or hk mr-something...searching the board will help with the specifics, but they are supposed to be excellent rifles, and if you can find one i wouldnt pass it up.

If you haven't entered the military-style rifle area yet, go with the AR. Ammo is less expensive than the .308 in the M1A, it has more ban-able stuff on it, it's better for HD, it (usually) costs less, and its far more customizable. It's also lighter than the SIG 556, and has a far bigger aftermarket available for it.

October 5, 2008, 03:43 PM
AR-15 (.223)
Springfield M1A (.308)
Sig 556 (.223)

AR = Colt, LMT & Noveske
.308 M14 type rifle = Springfield M1A, LRB M14, Norinco/Poly Tech M14 & custom built rifle.

I like Colt LE ARs and I like my M14s custom built by SEI on Norinco/Poly Tech receivers.

My choice of those would be the M1A, but that's mainly because of the caliber. I'm not a big fan of the 5.56 NATO/.223 round beyond varmints, but that's just a personal preference. I know that a lot of people (and for that matter, countries) like the lighter round and that's fine; It's just not my choice.

The AR design is nice, I have an AR-10 in .243 and a lower that I'm having built with uppers in 450 Marlin and 7mm-08. If I were considering an AR15, I'd have to go with a piston-type like the LWRC in 6.8 caliber.

October 5, 2008, 10:19 PM
i voted M1a but it seems you like the AR's so go Noveske you can't beat one at all

October 5, 2008, 10:31 PM
Just got my very 1st rifle last week. Got a M1A Scout Squad! It's a beast!!!!!!!

October 5, 2008, 10:32 PM
Of those 3 I would go with an AR 15 made by Colt.

October 5, 2008, 10:34 PM
i would go with a bushy-master AR, cheaper ammo, less punishing to shoot than a M1A, and can be banned easier.
