Im thinking about dumping my first baby....

My buddy is buying his first pistol. At work we have a gun-to-person ration of about 5.5 (which includes a gal with 0). So my buddy is going to buy a 686+P. I have one that I bought used about 5 years ago. I love it.

We went to the store this week and he got his name down on the next 4" that comes in. While we were there I put my hands on a S&W performance center Model 327. I handle various guns when I go to the store but when I put my hands on this weapon it felt like I was just reunited with an old friend. I cant justify spending $1000 on a new revolver...but I could justify selling my old 686+P with rosewood grips and fiber sight for $450 and putting that towards a new 327.

My question is this. For those who have fired both, is the 327 that much better than the 686? If feels better, but does it handle better?

I haven't fired either but if the one is your first gun I think you'll regret the sale.

Why not save up ?

I agree with Treo. Why not save for the new pistol? I had a Charles Daly 1911 that I sold about a year ago, that I wish I hadn't. I barely shot the thing, but it was a damn fine gun. Now, between school and other obligations, it's going to take me quite awhile to replace it.

Not my first gun...my first revolver. My philosphy, after listening to others' countless stories, is that I will never sell a gun if I am going to take a beating on it. Nor would I sell one and not replace it with something else (like selling a revolver to buy a rifle). If I sell it for $450, I will be selling it for about what I bought it for. Since I am replacing a 357 revolver with a 357 revolver then I am not breaking my philosophy. So there isn't as much emotional attachment to this gun than say my Steyr M9. That gun is nice but if I were to sell it I would be breaking rule #1 (take a beating on it) because I bought it when it was a new model and they sell new for about half that now.

Thanks for the feedback so far. If anyone has ANY experience with this firearm, I would like to hear how it compares. And to not be shortsighted, is there another 8 shot 357 that compares to the S&W 327 TRR8 that I am overlooking?

I don't know how you couldn't be emotionally attached to a 686+ with rosewood, but thats me. Sometimes when you sell a good gun that gets the job done for something fancier you realize you don't need something that fancy. But you should definitely look into this if you want a PC 8 shot.

I don't know about the 327/627 but I carried a 4 inch 686 for years before my agency went to Glocks. They are big and heavy but sweet shooting, reliable, and rock solid. Keep the old war horse. Save for the new toys.

How about a $510. solution? It has the lock, but hey......how bad is that anyway?

If it's at all possible I would keep your M686 and save up for the M327 like the others have already said. I own a 6 shot M686, not a 7 round revolver like your M686+.I wouldn't want to be without a good all Steel .357 Magnum revolver.

Don't sell the guns that you actually like. Just save up and buy more...

At the risk of starting a debate I would advise you to sell it if that is what you want to do.

Any firearm is merely metal and wood (at least what I consider firearms). I can not get emotionly attached to an inanimate object. If I were to have kept all I have owned I would need at least another house to store them.

I buy them, use them and then they go to new homes. I do have a couple I would not like to sell but those are the ones that would be very hard to replace. A M1895 I had reworked from 30 Gov't to 405 WCF and an italian muzzleloader I reworked to 50-70 are two that spring to mind. COmmon run of the mill firearms that are easily found? They come and go.

It sounds like you may be able to sell to your workmate or maybe that is what you had planned. Good thought. Sales to friends are the most rewarding.

Good luck.

Did I read this right.... is THAT what you're planning to do?

I'm keeping my 686+. If you don't love yours enough to keep her,
maybe you shouldn't have her.....:scrutiny:

Shooting mag. loads through a 327 I think you'll realize what a mistake you made. 327 is designed to carry, not shoot.
