my friend at work just bought a bolt action rifle from a pawn shop. It's a .284 winchester, we cant figure out who made the gun. It says on the barrel Jackson Custom Guns Selman City, Texas.

But on the reciever it's stamped with a with a sun with rays coming from it and underneath that a panther stretched out (as in Leaping) all surrounded with a wreath. There is some Arabic writing or somthing similar to it from what he told me.

we cannot figure out who made this rifle

any clues or guesses would be greatly appreciated!

Does it look like this http://www.aliparsa.com/brno/crest.jpg ?
This is from a Persian version of the Brno rifle made by CZ. My guess is the one you have was rebarreled to .248 Win by the custom maker inscribed on the barrel.

1. Sword-wielding non-leaping lion

vs.

2. Leaping (presumably non-sword-wielding) Panther.

If it looks like the pic, how'd you get the #2 description from the #1 actual?

Anyway, looks like that's who made the receiver. The gun (as a whole, as in, putting parts together) was made by Jackson Custom Guns in Selman City, TX (as you pointed out). :p

from what he told me

I took this to mean that maybe the description of the markings was secondhand information. Some creative guessing found the Persian variant (I for some reason had it in my head that it was a Mauser variant).

Sean, it sounds like a Czech mauser sold to the Persians and reworked by some subsequent owner. Those receivers were among the very best '98 pattern around. The original would have been in 8x57JS, so this one must have a new barrel on it. If that smith knew his business it should be an excellent shooter.

the Persian Mausers are some of the finest finished in the world.

the .284 is an excellent cartridge. it's intent was the get the ballistics of the .280 (30'06 necked down to 7mm) in a cartridge which could be chambered in a short action (.308 lenght).

with the longer mauser action, sized for the original 8x57mm, you'll be able to load heavier bullets longer to take full advantage of the case capacity.
