Remington SPS Tactical 308 20 inch barrel

Hello, I just bought a one of these and went to the range today. All I brought was 3 boxes of generic Winchester 150 grain white and red box 308's. They sell them at Wal-Mart for about $10 a box if that. They almost look like a military round in ball configeration. Anyway this rifle is new and after sighting it in at 50 yards tood her out to 100 yards. I have equipted this rifle with Leupold VX-II variable 3 to 18.

My question is the best I could do with this rig is about 6 inch groups at 100 yards. I realize this is sick but is the Winchester cheap ammo the blame or is it me or the gun? I was rested with range bag and pads that grounded the gun tight. The trigger is sweet and my pull was slow and sure. Many years of shooting practice.

Tomorrow I plan to take some higher end rounds out to the range. Federal soft points etc.

I would say you and the ammo.

All the reviews I've read on that thing are very very positive.

Check the barrel and crown and see if there are any burr's that might screw up the bullet.

I'll do that, thanks!

I've got one that does 1" at 100 yards all day long, with military match ammo.

Well soon we will be able to tell weather this rig can shoot. Tomorrow I will take her out with some Federal soft point 150 grain rounds. I'll give a report tomorrow night.

So far with this Leopold 3 by 18 the target at 100 yards looks huge. With my range bag and other supports the only thing that is the variable is my eyes and my trigger finger and trigger squeeze.

brandy new?

my first guess is a loose scope...

Yep...check the scope.

My SPS Tactical shoots 5 shots groups at 300 yards that measure less than 1.25 inches across the widest point (around .3 MOA)

That is with my reloads, ammo may play a part in your troubles...but not 6 inches at 100 yards, either your scope is loose or defective, or there is a burr in your barrel.

I dinged the crown on my 700P in 300WM and it was shooting 3.5" groups at 100 yards, somewhere close to double what I was getting before. The ding wasn't too bad, but it doubled the size of the groups. It's possible you dinged the crown, but more likely it was the ammo in combination with bad technique. Shooting from a vise or something like a led sled will give you a better idea of the rifle's capability with certain ammo. Other than that, breaking it in might help but 6 inches at 100 yards is pretty big.

After checking all the scope mounts then check the action screws they could be a little loose or unevenly torqued .
I would pull the action out of the stock and give a good eye balling.
As stated above crown damage could be the problem. Though unlikely, bad head spacing is another possibility. I am sure you would have noticed this by looking at you brass.

I love Leupold but there is a reason they repair them.
Good luck.
