Anyone have any favorites? A lot of brands/models have popped up in the last few years, and I'm out of it as to what I should get. This is for one very expensive rifle, and a separate case for a pretty pricey 1911. I like the looks of the Storm cases, but was hoping to spend about $120 on the rifle case, maybe $30-40 on the pistol. Wal-Mart has Storm cases on their website, but higher-end models than I want. (How odd. Wally World carries more upscale gun accessories than I can afford. Now that's depressing.)

I got a hard-sided (plastic) case for my bolt gun at WalMart (unable to find it on their website), and it was a good investment at $30. Not sure of the manuf., but it has held up really well and provides the protection I wanted. All my handguns travel to the range in gun rugs.

for a while, hardigg storm cases were kicking pelican's butt, but the last pelican case i got had improved to be fairly equal to the storm.

These offer lots of protection for the buck.

Most of the foam filled ones are some times tricky to fit a scoped rifle. They leave little room top and bottom of the rifle. This one stands the rifle up. It holds the rifle by the butt stock in a foam slot and the forearm lays on foam the whole thing is tied down with heavy duty velcro straps. Inexpensive and works. They offer an ingraving service to put your name or other stuff on the case on a metal tag.

I've had good experience going on 10 years with these:

Don't go cheap, especially if what it's protecting is valuable. Buy a Pelican or Storm and be done with it. I've got a Pelican for 3 pistols and I'll almost certainly invest in more as I collect more valuable firearms.

Thanks to all. I think I'll start with the Plano for car travel and go with a Storm case later if I need one for planes.

IMO, the best value for the type of case you are looking for are the Gun Guard All Weather series of cases. (Two pistol sized cases and one rifle.) They are built similarly to the Pelican and Hardigg Storm cases but just use a more flexible grade of plastic. They are much better than the Planos, SKBs, regular grade Doskosils, etc. I have a few Starlights, Pelicans, Hardigg and quite a few of the low end cases that you normally see at sporting good stores and some times is part of the package when you buy a firearm. If I was to choose a case that was not one of the high end models, it would be the Gun Guard All Weather (it must be the All Weather line, their other lines are not so good).
