I have a colt .38 police positive special revolver. I am trying to get some bigger grips, like Hoage or Pachmayer, but I cannot seem to find out what size the frame is :cuss:... Like a " E" frame or "J" frame...:Can anyone tell me what I have???:)

That would be a D frame, the same as the Detective Special, Cobra, Agent, Diamondback, etc.
There were two different butt (grip) lengths. Is the butt frame the same length as the grips (old style), or is it shorter with the grips extending beyond (post-1966)? To the best of my knowledge, aftermarket grips only fit the short frame.

Should be "D" frame.
Acme and Fitz produced a few different styles.
Suggest prowling a few gun show aisles.

There are 4 different grip frame sizes for Colt "D" frames. 1st generaton Police Positive Specials used a very slim square butt, 2nd issue were available with a slightly wider, larger square butt, 3rd issue used either the same 2nd issue type or a round butt version & later, a shortened version. All subsequent models used this short frame, square butt.
1st issue grips are the toughest to find. Reproductions of New Police or PP & PPS grips are usually pretty bad and there's a dearth of other options. The two "full-frame" (square & round) are tough also, but a few more options exist. Plenty of grip types & styles are available for the later abbreviated grip frames.
The best sources I've found are the online auction sites Gunbroker, Auction Arms and sadly, EBay.
