From information that I can gather, it's basically the 338 Win Mag necked up to .358 dia. and is a near twin to the 358 Norma Mag., a very potent cartridge. Newton never worked with belted cases so it was just a label that was used on the 30 belted and 35 belted wildcats. This was before the 300 Win Mag. came out.
I would be willing to bet that starting loads for the 358 Norma Mag would probably be ok if the rifle is in good shape. Perhaps someone has some more to add.

nambu1, are those loads based on the 338 Win Mag case necked up? The powder charges seem excessive compared to the 358 Norma Mag. That load for instance lists a 250gr with 79 gr.of IMR4350 as max @ 2850+fps. I would rather err on the side of caution. I got my info from the Ammoguide site.

My dad put together this rifle 45 years ago its on a Mauser 98 action with a Douglas Barrel, the brass is shortend and necked 300 H&H, 358 Norma Mag. or 338 Win Mag. The shells are loaded with 65 grs. of 4895 with a 250 gr. spire point bullet. I'm trying to get to a load that doesn't hurt so bad to shoot it and would be a better load for Deer
Thanks, Wally

Well syclone, I believe if you back off 10% on the powder charge and drop to a 200-225gr. bullet, it should give you a much easier shooting load but still have good ballistics. A 225gr. Nosler partition is what I recommend, because it will not blow up on deer size game like some jacketed soft points or ballistic tips.
It sounds like a nice rifle and it's capable of taking all game on this continent with the right load. A great heirloom.

I could only find the 358 Norma Mag drawing. The 338 casing is 2.500" long.

Being a wildcat, it'd be nice to make a casting of the chamber so you know the exact dimensions of your rifle. Try a cerrosafe casting.
