I am thinking along the lines of a Mossberg 500 with about a 20 inch barrel and either GR or regular rifle sights.
I would like to have one for a HD/general plinking gun.
Any suggestions?
Any other makes or models I should consider?

Others to consider...
Remington 870
Ithaca 37
Winchester 1300
Benelli Nova
For semi autos...
Remington 1187
Winchester X2
Benelli - M1, M3
There's a lot of material in the archives, which may be of some help. Please consider searching for previous threads.

There's a plethora on good short shotguns in the Archives, you may want to start with the thread on The Big Four in the floating threads up top.
The Mossie's a good choice, even if not my first choice. Software is more important than hardware, LEARN to shoot, and be %^&*ing deadly with most any reliable shotgun.
Since you asked, I suggest trying out a few and getting the one that feels best to you.Stick to major brands and ask questions here before you buy.

My experience is limited to Mossberg and Remington pumps. I would not hesitate to recommend either brand. I probably like the 870 more though, and have several barrel choices, stock choices, and magazine choices for mine. In just a few moment, it can be configured for HD, hunting, shooting games, or plinking.

Any of the Big 4.
nowadays it pays to be patient and carry cash, any of the 4 and the only "paperwork" being the cash is my preference....

I don't have the ad in front of me right now, but Dunham's Sporting Goods has the combos from Mossberg on sale right now...Long vent-rib barrel (28") for "Field & Woods", and a shorter (24" rifled) for slugs. Another combo has the 18-1/2" cylinder bored barrel.
Dunham's is popular here in the "MidWest" area, may or may not exist in your corner of ther world.
From what I have seen, the "Big 5" chain out west is about the same as Dunham's here in Ohio.
p.s. I am a Mossberg guy, but I have no complaints with Ithica, Remington or Winchester. Have fired all of them at some time over my 50+ years; I happen to prefer the offerings of O. F. Mossberg & Sons. Your Mileage Will Vary.

I'm very pleased with my Mossberg 500 Persuader (20in /8shots w/heat shield). Good quality at a very reasonable price. I've seen them as low as $209 recently. Can find one for $219 most any day. I paid $219 for mine with a pistol grip at the local hardware that didn't have any in stock with a shoulder stock. I then ordered a Mossberg shoulder stock for $30 over the Internet, so a paid a little more. Nevertheless $250 is still a pretty good price for this model with both the pistol grip & shoulder stock. Also it's not nearly as bad to shot with the pistolgrip as I expected. I had no problem controlling the gun.
