LennyJoe,

Go have a few drinks at Howl at the moon. It's a pianobar like no other, and it's a guaranteed good night out with the fellas in the class with you. And the ladies aren't too bad looking either.

Howl at the moon (http://www.howlatthemoon.com/)

Seriously, it's the only bar in town I frequent (when I am there for schools)!

Dallas Market Hall Gun Show the end of the month. Tulsa on Oct 18, the biggest in the country. Great Western Show in Dallas at the beginning of November if you are still around and I know that there will be a Houston Reliant Center show during that time. Of course you can still hit the San Antonio Airport show the first weekend of every month and the Austin show the third weekend of the month.

For the best Mexican food, go to Mi Tierra.

Now that you got to Texas you should try and work your way to a gun-friendly town!

Drove it, huh? If you ran I-10, you probably noticed that the only purpose of the country between Fort Stockton and Ozona is to hold the east and west coasts out of the oceans...

US 90 is a bit more interesting. You can take a break at the Judge Roy Bean museum at Langtry, and the Gage Hotel in Marathon has a pretty good bar and restaurant. When you hit Alpine, you're just 80 miles north of my stomping grounds.

Seems like a lot of the folks in Van Horn (where 90 comes into I-10) are on the grumpy side. I always figured they're there because their cars broke down, and they've never been able to get the money together to leave.

Sumtin I should know about San Antonio?

I read the Texas regs but not anything specific on San Antonio.

I will be armed off base so if you know something I dont please let me in on it.

You got that right!! Did see 7 deer and 6 turkey on the way between Ozona and Kerrville. Got the blood going again for getting back to green pastures to hunt.;)

You noticed that, too, Art? I figured the same thing, and add on that their bad attitude has to be aggravated by the fact that they're 'bout halfway between one beautiful playground (Guadalupe Mts) and another (Davis Mts, Chisos Mts.).

Lennyjoe, it may seem hokey, but drop by and do the full tour of the Alamo. There's a genuine message to be learned there, that the real Texicans know and remember.

The next towm east of Ozona is Sonora. I'v been deer hunting there for the last 15 years.
Welcome to Texas! Have a great time!

Sumtin I should know about San Antonio?

I know there are plenty of good 2nd ammendment folks in San Antonio but that doesn't stop the city from enforcing an ordinance that bans loaded rifles or shotguns in the city limits. So, even if you have a CHL you can't have that shotgun in the truck to fight your way to should you need it.

I also have heard stories (and I admit this is hearsay) of CHL holders receiving very cold treatment from local LEOs.

San Antonio has a large hispanic population. While that makes for a wonderfully rich culture, the Texas cities with large hispanic populations also tend to be the most liberal. I believe that's the source of San Antonio's preemption law. I don't know if they have any other preemptions aside from the loaded rifle/shotgun law.

Another important stop: The Museum of the Pacific War, in Fredericksburg, an easy drive from Saint Tonyville.

Didnt bring the shotgun this time.;)

I have to check everything into the armory when Im on base. That means they are gonna get to know me pretty good cause every time I go off base I will be making a stop there to pick up my travel partner.

Art, Im seriously concidering taking 90 back west when I leave here just to see another part of Texas.

Also thinking of spending the weekend up in Dallas area when the NHRA comes to town.:D

***!?!?!?

No loaded long guns in your car?

I thought TX had a preemption law?

Details?

Jeff OTMG
September 15, 2003, 01:21 AM
Texas does have pre-emption and San Antonio doesn't like it one bit. You can legally walk down the riverwalk with a rifle over your shoulder, but the SAPD will have something to say about it. I don't know if it has ever been tested, but it needs to be. Maybe next year I will have a chance to go down there and stir up some trouble. I will have to arrange some pro-bono legal representation first. I have heard that there is a city ordinance against carrying a knife with a locking blade and that would not be covered under the pre-emption law for firearms.

Good luck Lennyjoe! First time back to Lackland? It'd be kinda like going back in time. Would be interesting to see the Rainbows marching down Truemper Ave. dragging their 70 lb duffel bags in formation (sort of). Maybe take in a parade?

The Academy is also a good opportunity to do some networking, as you'll probably be running into a few of the people you meet there, later in your career. Have a good time!

You don't know what 6th street is?

Just kidding. It's the place in Austin where everyone goes to party. And by everyone, I mean all the UT hotties.

6th Street on weekend nights is a mile long party that everyone is invited to. There are dozens of bars, restaurants and clubs in the area whose sole mission is to get you plastered and shakin yer booty. The shot bars with $1 drinks are a good place to start. :)

Looks like I might be heading to Austin one of these weekends before I leave here.

First stop though is Howl at the Moon.

Oh yea, before this gets locked out for Off Topic, Does anyone know a good range close to Lackland to shoot handguns?

Glockster35
September 16, 2003, 04:38 AM
LennyJoe,

If you can't find one when you get there, look in the yellow pages. There are a few listed there, and one is located at or near the Medina Annex. If you still can't find one, make a call to the Lackland Combat Arms facility, there's bound to be a couple of shooters out there.

Also there is a gunshop right off base (can't remember where though) that is owned by a retired Combat Arms Instructor. He would probably know.

Man thats the same time the NHRA is up in Dallas. Was planning on going to the drags.

Might have to rethink that now. Maybe drags on Saturday and guns on Sunday. Or vice versa.

Decision time............
