KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police raided a home day care center and found crack cocaine — some on the floor next to a 4-month-old child — and two loaded guns. One gun was cocked and within reach of children, police said.

"You expect kids to be safe when you take them to day care," Police Capt. Rich Lockhart said. Instead, day care was "a very dangerous situation for these kids," he said.

Valeriece D. Ealom, 34, who ran the day care in her home, was arrested during the Wednesday afternoon raid. Police said she had sold crack cocaine to undercover police officers as she watched the children.

She was charged Thursday with conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine, as were Clifford Dorsey, 43, and Megashia C. Jackson, 27.

Ealom didn't have a listed telephone number, and the public defender's office said it was not currently representing her.

Police said officers escorted children out of the home while Ealom was being arrested.

"It slowed our entry, but the safety of the kids was our top priority," said Sgt. Jay Pruetting, who led the raid.

No one answered the door Friday when a reporter and photographer visited the home.

Authorities found 50 grams of crack cocaine in a plastic bag that had been shoved into the pipes of a toilet, as well as 2.4 grams in an office area, the U.S. attorney's office said.

A small bag of crack cocaine was also found on the floor next to a 4-month-old baby, Pruetting said. The drugs had a street value of about $7,000.

Also within reach of children was a loaded and cocked 9 mm handgun. A loaded shotgun was in a closet.

The state health department, which licenses day care centers, had no record of Ealom's business, however, it was registered with the state Department of Family Services under a program that offers child care subsidies to low-income parents.

I guess the children of poor people don't need the same level of protection as those of middle class people.

pdmod,

In that part of KC, you can make a bet on just who the parents were buying their rock from... Valeriece?

Sad story about a sad part of a once great city... parts of it are still nice, like any other city, parts of it are scary...

But hey, what can a four month old do to a cocked handgun anyway right?

Teeth on it?

Pitiful.

Adios

When this story first aired on the local news, they stated the occupant of the house was a gun dealer.

To add another twist to this story.Ealoms 15 year old son is out on bond at this time for attempted murder. He was involved in a gun battle that occured on an inner city street in broad daylight. Two people were wounded by this idiots bullets, one of them an adolescent child.
