Cat loses eye after air gun attack Sep 11 2003

A CAT was badly injured after being shot in the side by an air rifle in Bookham.

Pet owners are being warned to be on their guard after Ginnie the cat was the victim of one of two rifle attacks at the weekend.

Ianthe Cox, owner of Brelades veterinary surgery in Knoll Road, Dorking, is warning owners to keep a close eye on their pets after the two attacks.

The horrific incidents took place in Bookham on Friday and Dorking on Sunday.

She said: "It is pretty horrible. One cat, Polo, has had to have an eye removed, because he was so badly hurt,"

Polo's upper jaw is broken and he is being fed through a tube, while Ginnie, the cat with a side injury, has been returned to its Bookham owner.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said the number of attacks rises dramatically during school holidays and when the evenings get lighter.

She said this provided a strong indication that youngsters are responsible for the attacks.

The RSPCA has dealt with 900 other such attacks in England and Wales over the last year.

The spokesman said: "This figure is thought to be just the tip of the iceberg.

"Many afflicted animals will hide away and die painful, lingering deaths."

I'm sure it was horrific for the cats; I'm equally sure members of Homo sapiens are in much greater danger in England than cats.

My Question, "WHY did it make the headlines???"
Because it is England and they are trying to outlaw air rifles. The reporters and news media is giving them all the help they can.:cuss:

If you found the kid who shot your cat in the eye, how many years do you think you'd spend in U.K. prison for giving him a good beating? :scrutiny:

could it be that gun crime is, even at this scale, so rare and newsworthy that that is the reason why it made it into the local paper / website?

Yes agricola, but here in the U.S. when we read stuff like this we get the feeling we're reading a Thick As A Brick style parochial paper. Yes we get this kind of crap in our local newspapers from time to time, but when we see this stuff in England it catches our fancy because your government's next target is air guns. Knives are already outlawed unless in a home, am I correct here?

Btw, I see you're still ONLY posting in Legal and Political. What have you got, 580 posts out of 591 in this section alone?

wondernine,

yes, as i said the last time you (or someone else) posted that question, I only post in L+P because my interest here lies in correcting the tidal wave of BS and/or outright fabrication (see zedicus' post about the headless body for evidence of that) that passes for 80-90% of the comment on the UK on this forum and on TFL, both from certain posters and from the media generally, who do not suddenly become competent fairminded guardians of the truth when they write something that (however weakly) backs up someones worldview or preconcieved opinions.

some knives are outlawed in a public place unless that person has good reason for carrying them: as a vague link to the Australian thread, this does include a skean dhu when worn as Highland dress, and also includes knives and other items that might be construed as "offensive weapons" used as part of someones work.

the law actually depends on the definition between "public place" and "private place" - its not just the home, knives or other offensive weapons may be held where the owner consents

I hadn't noticed that you only post in L&P. But I must say that whenever I see your name, I check that post. It's always interesting. Back on topic, consider these three headlines, all on the same day and same story (one dear to both our hearts):

"Blair Gets a Pass From Intelligence Panel" New York Times

"UK Parliament Clears Blair Over Iraqi Arms" Financial Times

" Blair 'Overrode' Terror Warnings" BBC

Ag, just out of curiosity, what knives are not considered "offensive weapons" in the UK?

As for the excuse that gun crime is so rare that a non-gun misdemeanor made the paper, I'm not buying it. That reporter knows that air guns are an issue on which your goofier politicians are trying to get, as we say, "traction." He may not think of what he's doing as an attempt to aid them, but he's at least making an attempt to cash in on the notoriety of the subject.
