What is the first gun you have in mind when you hear 357 Mag or 44 Mag??

I think that when it comes to these 2 calibers the first gun in my mind is the Colt Python for the 357 Magnum and the S&W mod 29 for the 44 Magnum.

IMHO these 2 revolvers are the quintessential iconic handguns for the 2 cartridges and made famous by Hollywood.

They are the symbol of the modern American revolver at its finest before the auto craze raged on.

So 357 Magnum = Colt Python and 44 Magnum = S&W 29....do you agree??

Comments and Opinions??

Simply mentioning ".357 Magnum" evokes thoughts of the true .357, the first .357, the Smith and Wesson 357 Magnum, now the Model 27.

Same for the .44 Magnum. When I think .44 Magnum, the first picture in my head is of a S&W 29.

Without doubt for me it was the first 357 magnum revolver I shot. A Taurus, not sure of the model number but It belonged to my brother-in-law and still does. Even his best efforts could not get me to pick that 4 inch barreled wrist breaker up again. And it was not the ammo nor my grip, he spent weeks with me showing me the proper methods and ergonomics. A few other people we know shot it and felt the same. The most common comment was that it was posessed.

.357 - GP161 (blue) - my first revolver of any sort. But, I won't argue with anyone who says the Python is just about the prettiest .357 ever made.

No doubt - a 4"/5" 627 (X8) for .357M and a 629 4"/6" for .44M - maybe because that's what I have! Always - a S&W!

I have a couple of Taurus 66s, a 3" and a 4" and they're no worse than my M19 Smith was. I'm not sure the problem you had. My WORST .357 medium frame for felt recoil was a Ruger Security Six, my first centerfire handgun. Thing HURT worse than my SP101, REALLY. The 4" 66 is sweet.

First gun that comes to mind when I think 357, though, is the 19, the original medium frame. I was never in love with N frame .357s, heavy. I like medium frame guns like the K frames. They're not as strong, but I don't feed 'em a steady diet of hot stuff. That's what my Blackhawk is for.

Hmmm.

The Dirty Harry movies would seem to make the model 29 the .44 that everyone knows of.

I don't know about the .357. There were probably more Highway Patrolmen and Pythons weren't even around in the 40s and first half of the 50s. It might be the .357 standard bearer due to cult following but I think more people associate V-8 with "Chevy" rather than "Cadillac", for whatever that's worth.

Actually, there is a movie featuring a .357. It's even named for the firearm in question - can you imagine if "Dirty Harry" was actually released as "S&W 29"?

So, who here is going to take it upon themselves to see to it that the movie is dubbed, or at least subtitled and released here on DVD to compete in the several "revolver movie" threads?

Depends- Do you want to hunt with either gun? Or are they for home defense or target shooting? If hunting I'd go with a 6-1/2 inch Ruger Blackhawk in .357 mag. And the 10-1/2 inch Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 mag. Now if for home defense or target practice go with any Smith and Wesson and you really can't go wrong. I us mine for longer range hunting. Zero is 100 yards on 3 of the 4 Rugers I use. (Blackhawk .357 6-1/2 with a Red-Dot scope, Super Blackhawk Hunter .44 7-1/2 with Burris 2-7 power scope and Super Blackhawk .44 10-1/2. Open site on this one. Try one and you will know why.) The 4th is a 4 inch Blackhawk .357. I just got and I think I'll use it for those to close for a rifle shots when calling in coyotes. Up to you, I like Ruger single action hand guns so much I have the Sturm Ruger Emblem tattooed on my left arm. But Smith and Colt make awesome guns. Just try as may as you can before you buy one.

.357 - Ruger Redhawk, huge, stainless and my first ever 357 magnum. But I suspect more people would think of the Blackhawk or a S&W double action.

Mention magnum revolvers and I picture N-frame Smith and Wessons.

The first, for the .357, is grampy's old M-28/Highway Patrolman with 4" tube. (Not sure if it's a pre-model # or not.) Learned to shoot DA revolvers with that gun and .38 Specials.

For the .44s, it is the M-29/629. I have a 6" 629 sitting with me right now, and will probably take it to the range later today. The first handgun I bought for myself, and I don't think I could ever part with it.

Now, in the .357 I'd say the M-19 runs a close second, and I have always wanted one, even though the 686 is stronger.

For me it has nothing to do with a gun I own or have ever shot. It is an impression left with me as a kid in both cases. Even to this day when I hear or read .357 the first thing that comes to my mind is a cop. Not a detective but a patrolman: Blues, nightstick, handcuffs, bright shinny badge on his chest, radio, and of course a gleaming blue steel Smith & Wesson combat magnum in a duty holster on his hip. I can still see an officer with that shiny deep blue gun to this day. I still remember staring in awe at many officers with those shiny blue revolvers in their holsters growing up. Until they started carrying wondernines or plastic-fantastics that was all I ever saw. Sure who didn’t want a python, but they all carried , blue steel, Smith & Wesson combat magnums. As for the 44 Mag? “You’ve got to ask your self one question: Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?” I own versions of both now.
