Anybody ever heard of this? A close friend says his Gramps used to have one. Curious as to what it even is but he said it was different from a regular Garand.

You mean BM-59.

It's an Italian Garand modification to accept a detachable magazine. Very pricey, not too common, though a lot of parts-kits got imported about a decade ago and built stateside by places like FedOrd.

Basically, it's a Tanker Garand with a detachable BAR-style mag.

Springfield Armory carried them in their line in the mid 80's. The late survival guru Mel Tappan thought it was the best MBR made. I think Jeff Cooper liked it too. I remember seeing them in a few gun store as a teenage. Alway thought them were cool. I think today them sale for about $3200 and the magazines are about $100 a piece.

The original model made for the Italian army was selective fire; the version imported into the U.S. for a while was semi-auto only.
