If you could only have a few revolvers, what would they be?

Well, one just isn't enough :D I've got a Taurus 9-shot 22lr, an OLD S&W mod 60 & a not so old S&W mod 19. If I were to add one or 2 more revo's to the collection, what should they be & why?

You should buy Colt. Here's Why:
1--They aren't making any more of them
2--They are the prettiest revolvers ever made
3--They're better than Smith & Wesson and don't even talk to me about Ruger
4--They're American
5--For whatever reason, they are appreciating rapidly
6--They shoot like *censored* ;) -Coronach
7--Colt never entered into any stinkin' agreements with the US Government
8--They have COOL names! How could any one get excited about a Model 29? But a Python? Or a Diamondback? Or a Detective Special? Instant manliness!
9--The wide target hammers on the high-end Colts are so freaking cool they make just cocking the gun a thrill
10--I like them best so they MUST be the best. :D :D
Disclaimer: I don't know anything about guns. I'm a lousy shot. All opinions voiced here are the express opinion of the author who has the right as an American to believe he is right whether you can logically prove otherwise or not. S&W 686 in 4". My favorite revolver-just a classic in my opinion! And yeah-I DID buy a new one recently-excellent trigger and new S&W owners-I am fine with that!
342PD for carry.
Will add a.480 or something at some point.

To some of us, a few means three and to others it means three dozen.:D I will limit my definition of a few to six and they would be:
S&W 4" 586
S&W 640 .357 Centennial
S&W 2 1/2" 66
Ruger Redhawk 5 1/2" SS .44mag
these I already own and I plan on buying a
Ruger 3" SS GP100
S&W 6" 19 (if I can find a pristine example from years gone by).

I'm partial to Smith & Wesson revolvers.
Why?
Because they are the best...of course.
My list would include:
A 6" K22 (pre model 17)
A 4" K22 (pre model 18)
A 6" .357 Magnum (pre model 27)
A 3.5" .357 Magnum (pre model 27)
A 4" Model 19
An Airweight Bodyguard
There are two Colts that I think are must have for revolver nuts. They would be:
An original Colt SAA because of its heritage.
An early Python because of its excellent fit, finish, and aesthetics.
What's a Ruger?

My list:
1) Five-screw S&W K-22 Masterpiece with 6" barrel
2) S&W M48 (.22 WMR) with 8-3/8" barrel
3) S&W M27 or pre-M27 (.357 Magnum) with 5" barrel
4) S&W M18 or pre-M18 (K-22 Combat Masterpiece)
5) S&W 342PD

I'm also partial to S&W N-Frame revolvers, but Ruger's GP-100 family is very well made and rugged.
My list of a "few" to add would consist of S&W Model 27 N-Frame .357 with 6" barrel, a S&W 586/686 L-Frame .357 with 4" barrel (a Ruger GP-100 would be a reasonable substitute for the 586/686), a S&W Mod 57 4" or 6" because .41 Mag is a great caliber, and since everyone needs a .44 mag, a Model 629 -- I'm partial to the new 3" barrel 629-6.
RWK
September 13, 2003, 11:38 AM
Included on my "short list" would be:
1) Ruger KGP-141 - all around usage and carry
2) Smith five-inch, P&R'ed, 27-2 - perhaps the best modern revolver
3) Smith 625-9 Mountain Gun (in .45 Colt) - a thing of beauty and a joy to shoot
4) Ruger SP-101 - easily cancelled and carried
I have limited this to four, but my heart tells me it should be MUCH longer.
Best regards -- Roy

As was mentioned, you don't place a limit on the number so it is hard to be tough on myself.
I also like S&W revolvers and one a fair number of them. BUT, if I was limited in the number of revolvers I could own, even if it is only an internet game, then Ruger is going to dominate my choices.
First would have to be my do everything revolver: The 4", stainless, GP100. If I was limited to only one gun, this would be a serious consideration. It is strong enough to last me a lifetime. It can be carried concealed. It is cheap to shoot/handload for. It can be used for hunting/plinking/personal defense. I love my Smiths, but to me, there isn't a Smith that provides what the GP100 offers in a package of the same size.
Second would have to be a .22. I love my .22 handguns and I shoot them a lot. Lately I have been running through about 500 rounds a week out of them. I own a half dozen or so, but if I could only have one, I guess it would be my 6" Ruger Bisley Single Six. This would be a tough decison, but I think this would be my best long term choice.
Third would be my 7 1/2", stainless Super Blackhawk. I would like to have one big bore revolver. Again, if I was limited in the number I can have I would want one that was very durable. I just don't have faith that my Smith .44 mags will hold up to any load I want to give them over the long haul. It is accurate, strong, and in a caliber that is suitable for long range shooting, or hunting any animal I might hunt with a handgun. I have always had very good luck handloading the .44 mag cartridge.
This would be the minimum I would want to go with. If I could have four I suppose my next choice would be my old Smith Model 60, .38 Special which is definitely my most carried handgun.

To tell the truth, I almost bought a Python last week. Didn't after trying the trigger. It was okay for the first 1/2 of the pull then started stacking something awful until it dropped :barf: Call me spoinled, but I like the vintage S&W triggers that are absolute buttah  The revo's I've been contemplating are the 640, 625, 617 10-shot target model, & a mod 27. If I could narrow this list to one or 2 I'd be a happy camper :)

OK, do you want the answer to the question in your title, "If you could only have a few revolvers, what would they be? ", or the answer at the end of your post, "If I were to add one or 2 more revo's to the collection, what should they be & why?":D
In answer to the first, if I could only have a few (how to define that- maybe one of each general type):
-K-frame: My pick would be a 3" .357 (preferably) or .38. I love my 3" 65LS. The barrel is long enough to have a fairly easy sight radius, short enough to cut an oz or two, and this barrel length seems to "point" and handle better than just about anything out there.
-J-frame: I like pretty much all of them at this point. However, if I could only have one I like the Taurus 85CH. This size gun is too small and light for .357mag (IMHO of course) and the bobbed hammer is nice. Both Taurus J-frame sized guns I've had have had wonderful DA triggers. This gun is a little heavy (controllable follow up shots) but still light enough for pocket or ankle carry. When it finally comes out the 9mm 905 (I think that is the model name) will probably take over as my preference here.
-L-frame: I love my 6" 586, though if I would only have one (I only have one now but I plan to get more plus the similar Ruger GP100) I'd probably go with a 4". Other than barrel length, my preference is for one of the S&W models (the 686 can still be had new with either 6 or 7 shot cylinders, the 586 is only used as are the fixed sight 581 and 681, any would be fine though for only one I'd prefer the adjustable sight 686 or 586), however the Ruger GP 100 would be nice as well.
Larger Revolver: Probably a .41 mag from either S&W or Taurus, but maybe a .44mag or .45LC.
SA Revolver: Toss up between Cimmaron (more true to the Colt SAA) or the Ruger Vaquero (virtually indestructable).
.22lr Revolver: Probably the Taurus 94 but the .22lr Tracker would be close as well (shooter not collector).
Now if you want the second question, what one or two should you add:
You have a K-frame .357 (M19), a .22 (94) and a J-frame (60). It seems to me that at least you have the bare minimums covered, get what appeals to you. Personally, I like the idea of having one stronger .357 (L-frame or Ruger GP100) that can take vitually unlimited shooting of full power magnums but the rest is a toss up. Larger caliber, or SA, or another K-frame (3"), or the classic S&W M10, or...

1. A well-worn Smith m10 or m64. True .38 spl service models that served our armed patrols well until the early 1990's. (Still a viable option for some!)
Most former cop/guard revolvers have had an EASY life of target wadcutters. The "qualify with what you carry" doctrine is relatively new. Most of these I've examined have perfect timing/lockup and have probably had a few hundred lite loads through them.
Such a gun shouldn't cost more than $200. Since they're really not appreciating, it's easy to justfiy blasting 200 wadcutters/session! Affordable ammo + affordable gun-=FUN.
2. A used Taurus or Rossi snub. Hard to believe what's out there for 175.00, sometimes even less. Will fit in your M60 holsters, then you could cherish the Smith, shoot the Brazillian snub!
You'd have a well-rounded wheelgun setup. All would be affordable and not so museum-quality that you wouldn't want to shoot 'em!

Wunderkind has a great idea - an M10. I just bought a new (1-03 production!) M10-11 with a 2" barrel (got your snubby needs covered) from CDNN ($280).
I would have to have an N-frame big bore - a 4" (or 5") 625 and a bunch of moonclips. Fun to shoot - and ammo is plentiful and widely available.
I like the looks, feel, and operation of the good old 625 (.45 Colt) and 629 (.44 Magnum) Mountain Guns. The 629 MG would also chamber the .44 Russian and .44 S&W Special. Sadly, try to find .45 Colt ammo at Wally World, etc. I like both of mine... hard decision which I'd 'keep'.
For a great kinetic energy range (10:1), and in case you run into wayward pachyderms, you cannot beat a 7.5" Super Redhawk in .454 Casull. It will take .45 Colts, wimpy to harsh, and .454 Casull, harsh to uh-oh... I suppose it would chamber .45 Schofields (.45 S&W), too... I just haven't tried those in mine. This revolver has superior ergonomics - .454's are much less severe than the milder .44 Magnums in my MG.
Oh, and I'd have to have my one evil-bottom-feeder - a .22LR Ruger MKII - just too dependable and way too much fun!

I pretty much have what I want for revolvers:
.44 Mag = Redhawk
.45 Colt SAA style = Vaquero
.357 snub = SP101
About the only ones left that I want would be a Python or Anaconda (classics, and I like their styling. a mix of the Elegence of S&W, and the 'beefiness' of Ruger) and a S&W 610 (for pin shoots/idpa/and having a revolver that shoots 40/10mm)
And maybe a Super Redhawk in a 'big' big bore, either 454 or 480 Ruger.
and maybe a BFR in 45/70 simply for the big eyed looks it gets!
