Greetings, I am using 22 CB shorts in a Marlin bolt action with Simmons 22 Mag scope. I am using the 22 CB Shorts for noise reduction in town. I will be using the 22 CB shorts on varmits eating my garden. Rabbits, rats, hedge hogs, the like. At what range would you zero the scope to get the most from the 22 shorts.

Well how far do you expect a shot?

That is an excellent question. I quess my question should have included the effective range for a humane kill with the 22 short. The 5 yard shot will happen, but I do not know how far the 22 short will carry. I think 25 yds would be the max I will shoot, if they will be accurate that far. Thanks

I bought aome CB's for essentialy the same reason about 5 years ago(ferrel cats in my case). What I ended up doing, was buying a cheap Wally world second scope for my Savage .22lr bolt action. I figured out the longest distance I would be shooting at them in my own yard. Then I set up a pizza box in front of a couple of old phone books and a small wall of cinder blocks. I drew a 3in circle on the pizza box, and used that for my zero target. It took me about 12 rounds, shooting in 3 shot groups to get them all in the circle. Unfortunately I was never able to get better than 2in groups from a 20inch barrel. The only noise sounded like hitting a 2x4 w/ a hammer. I have since solved my cat problem since Animal Control wouldn't do it.

So far I've taken cats at up to 15yds

I have specs for the CCI catalog #0026 CB Mini-Cap and Remington catalog #CB22S CBEE. My ballistics software predicts:

For a 2" vital zone, sight the CCI 0.99" high at 25 yards and it will zero at 9.9 yards and 43 yards, should be 1" from 6 to 50 yards.

The Remington, 0.85 inches high at 25 yards is predicted to zero at 12.2 yards and 53 yards and be 1" from 7 to 61.1 yards.

For a 1" vital zone, sight the CCI 0.50" high at 25 yards for zeros at 12.1 and 36 yards, " from 7 to 40.6 yards.

The Remington come up 0.45" high at 25 for zeros at 14.9 and 44 yards, " from 9 to 49.7 yards.

These seem to me to be rather large differences between predicted trajectories, given the small differences between velocities, bullet weights, and ballistic coefficients. Running tests to find real world trajectories from your rifle is always in order, but especially here.
