What's the shortest barrel you can buy for this shotgun and is there a place to order it? I've got a fully rifled barrel and 26" vent rib for it now but have never seen anything shorter than the rifled barrel.

TNT, the Remington site does not show any barrels shorter than the 21" barrels for slugs. This does not mean that there are not after m arket barrels out there, but I doubt that any are available, unless you cut one off custom.

Reliability becomes a serious issue with short barrels on the 11-87. The shortest smoothbore you will see available to the general public is an 18" if I remember right, and it only functions with magnum level loadings. That barrel is on the 11-87P. The gas compensation system on the 11-87 is crude/archaic enough that it just does not have a lot of pressure range that will function the gun reliably.

I have an 11-87P with the 18" barrel and it seems to function propertly with every thing I have fed it so far.
I have never used the magnum loads.
Is this something that comes on with age of the gun or what??

Buck, some run a lot better than others. If you get an 11-87 that runs right it will continue to do so for a LONG time, like forever. The bad part is there just are not that many coming out of Remington that run right anymore.

I have an 1187P w/ 18in. brl. In my initial function testing it ran well with mag./full power loads, slugish w/ reduced recoil tactical loads and downright unreliable with target loads. There is supposed to be a small difference in the gas system with the police models in that it is built with full power loads in mind. This gun only has about 100 to 150 rounds down the tube so with more shooting it should do better. Al
