i just had a thought while reading a magazine. i really do not know much about shotguns. so here goes. can a shotshell be fired through a rifled slug barrel? safely? i am pretty sure it would be far from a perfect pattern, if it can be done. just curious.

A shell of the same caliber can be fired through a rifled slug barrel, but the spinning of the shotcup will cause a donut shaped pattern and lead up the barrel. It can be done but not a great idea.

This would be akin to firing a shotshell through a T/C 45/410 barrel without the choke tube installed (the choke tube stops the rifling rotation) and I can say for certain that it is not practical. The shot spreads rapidly upon leaving the muzzle, there is no pattern at all. I shot a 3' x 3' cardboard at a distance of 10 feet and it was completely covered with holes, with huge gaps, I am sure that even at that short distance a lot of the #6's missed completely. I don't see any real problem with leading, as I've shot hundreds of rounds (with the choke in) with no issues. Best to leave the rifling to the slugs and the smoothbore to the shot.

Hello,
Not sure if I posted here or another gun place -- BUT -- once at a action SG match , I used my Rem. 1100 with a rifled brl. and 00 buckshot --- the results were shocking --- it took me AT LEAST four shots to knock down each Pepper Popper !!!! They were at about 15 yards and after the match , I shot one shot of the 00 Buck at the SG pattern board but walked up to about 15 yrs. from it. Out of the 9 double O pellets -- FOUR WERE NOT EVEN ON THE PAPER -- the other 5 pellets were in a "cone" shape that was almost as large as a 55gal. drum.

thanks, that is what i wanted to know. i am thinking about a slug gun for deer (it will be next year at the soonest) . and wondering if it could double as a home defense gun with the same barrel. obviously not!

If you used the plastic-sleeved "Sabot Slug", yeah..OK for HD. Buckshot would have the wide open 'doughnut' pattern.
