Ruger Vaquero Base Pin

I tried some Buffalo Bore .45 Colt Standard Pressure 255 Grain "Keith" type ammo in my original model Vaquero (3.75 inch barrel). This seems a little hotter than the Winchester Silver Tips and CBA ammo I have been shooting. After two rounds the base pin ejected jamming the cylinder. I got it back in and I think it is secured. Why does the pin come loose from recoil? What am I not doing?

Rugers sometimes spit their base pins due to recoil. It's generally caused by tolerance stacking of mass produced parts; they don't fit together perfectly.

Shoot me an e-mail through the forum and I'll send you an excellent thread, with pix, on how to fix this. It's a pretty simple fix, and rather intuitive once you do some reading on it and look at the pictures.

The catch spring is sometimes weak. I don't recall the brownells order number, but there is a higher power one listed that generally fixes the problem.

The real fix is a Belt Mountain Locking Base Pin.

It not only stays in no matter what, but will tighten up the gun and reduce frame wear while it is doing it.

RC got it in one.The belt mountain pins have a allen head locking screw that locks it solidly to your barrel. Some hand fitting is sometimes required, but it is definatly going to stay put,so it's worth it.I bought some for my Colt clones, and can't say enough good about 'em.

This is will make me appear to be about as dumb as a fence post. I already have one in this Vaquero. I forgot about the Allen Head locking screw. Does anyone know what size wrench this screw uses. It is smaller than anything I have. Don't want to seperate the Base Pin from the gun to take it to the store and I sure don't want to take the gun to the store to find a wrench that fits. I tried a 1.5mm and the is too small.

Blacksmoke, just buy one of those assortments on a ring,or the ''jack knife style asst. with all the different sizes. You know you need one, anyways.Belt Mountain sent me one in the bag with the fitting instructions and the base pin.Any chance it's still in there?
