I have googled many versions of "cross sabers" and have not found an answer so I thought I would come here. Sometimes on the cavalry's crossed sabers symbol the blades point up and sometimes I have seen them pointing down. Are the ones pointing down incorrect or is their a tradition for each?

I think you'd have better luck on a military heraldry site or a reenacting site than here.

You can try hitting up the US Army Heraldry folks (http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/)and see if they have more than this: http://www.tioh.hqda.pentagon.mil/Branches/Cavalry.htm

I would also try sending a message to someone at one of these random sites:

Down is definitely wrong for U.S. cavalry units. Not all country's cavalry units use crossed sabres though.

The former 1st Air Cavalry used them; especially the ill fated Company D of the 2/7 Cav.,
until it was annhiliated.
