As one who likes to hunt more than kill I look at handgun hunting as an exercise in getting to within 50 yards or so for the shot. Open sights and something easliy carried on my hip. With that I prefer a 5 1/2" barrel as maximum and Ruger SA's though I have used my 5" S&W M29 as well. I also need no more than 1000 or 1200 fps to kill whether it be deer, hogs, elk or moose. As the game gets bigger I go to a larger diameter bullet only because I can not because I need to (I am a big bore six, or five, gun junkie). So.... with your question I would use the 480 R but it would be in something other than the Ruger SRH. I load my 475 Linebaugh to less than 480Ruger velocities with 400 gr bulllets, I load my 500 Linebaugh to the same velocities with 450 gr bullets, the 45 Colt with 325's at the same or, if just deer/hogs 280's at 1000 fps, the 44 Mag/Spcls get 300's/250's at 1200 fps or 100o fps... I am sure you get the picture. I have no use for high velocity big bore "hand"guns.

I like the .460S&W Mag because it also shoots .454 Casull and .45 Colt.

I have both and like them both. Each one has it's place in my opinion. My 480 Ruger is my up close handgun, and my 460 Mag is my long distance handgun.
If I want more power from my 480, I just take my 475 Linebaugh, or one of my other big bore handguns.
