Spyderco Delica Exposure Test

I completed a long-term exposure test of my Spyderco Delica yesterday. The test was unplanned: I lost the knife shortly before Father's Day and found it yesterday at the range. It had been outside, imbedded in the sand since June. It's been a fairly wet Summer, too.

This is an older Delica. I got it four or five years ago at least. It's made of AUS-8, which as you'll see, stodd up pretty well.

Here's what it looked like as found, with just some of the dirt and surface staining wiped off with my thumb:

Here's a shot of the inside. As you can see, sand is impacted into the handle:

And finally, here's what it looks like cleaned up:

I used hot, soapy water, Liquid Wrench from a spray can, Flitz metal polish, and FP-10 to clean it. It's still a bit stiff and needs sharpening, but other than that it's not really all that worse for the wear.

Very nice! My Spyderco Delicas have been in and out of the salt water of the Atlantic Ocean this summer and no rust problems at all. Just rinsed them off with tap water and lubed up the locking mechanism with Buck knife oil.

I'm looking at Decilas on e-bay. Anybody know where a guy can find one in the $30 buck range used? Even thou the new ones come with ATS-55 I can't afford $70 bucks.
