I just bought a Springfield 3rd genaration scope mount fot my M1A. I followed the instalation instructions to the letter and am convinced I did it corectly as I have installed many other mounts on other rifles before.
Anyway, the Weaver style base is high enough that I can still look through the iron sights under the mount. I was doing this when I noticed that the base of the new mount is dramatically off center, about a quarter of an inch to the right. At first I thought that the back was out of square but it is not. Is this intentional? I realize that I will have to install a chiek piece due to the height of the scope. is this off set designed to compensate?
Surely Sprimgfield is aware of this. Do any of you have any experience with this?

I went with the Smith Enterprise mount on mine, expensive mount but well worth the cost. Complaints about the Springfield mounts is why I decided to spend the extra cash on the Smith mount.

Mega dittos on the Smith Enterprise mount.
I have seen many issues with the Springfield mounts.
They are OK for getting a scope mounted to the rifle, but if you want durability, repeatability, and a much more precisely made mount go with Smith Enterprise, A.R.M.S. Inc., or Sadlak.

Be advised that if you put a Smith mount on an M1A the horizontal locating rib will need to be milled slightly thinner to fit properly. If you tell them what the mount is going on up front then they can do this job up front. I had alignment problems with mine and wound up sending them the mount and barrelled action to get it squared up properly.

BTW I have a spare unmodified Smith mount available for sale if anyone is interested. It's the std 1913 Picatinny, and was on the rifle very briefly. I went with the ACOG-adapted model when it became available.
