Speaking of Lee REAL bullets

When I read the thread of the Lee bullets, it reminded of several years ago, I decided to try them in my T/C Hawken. My brother and I molded up a bunch. I figgered being lighter they wouldn't kick as hard as the T/C Maxi-Ball. I had just installed a homemade tang mounted peep sight on my Hawken, and had it sighted in good with the Maxi's.

A friend and I went out to a dump and painted a spot on an old refrigerator about 60 yards distant. Loaded up and POW. I barked a tree about 6 feet to the right of the fridge. "Maybe I bent my peep" I thought as I loaded up again. POW. A little tree about 10 feet to the left of the fridge fell over. "Hmmnnn" thought I, "that's weird." One more shot. POW, dust kicked up about 20 feet in front of me. Not one to jump to quick conclusions, I got a piece of 1X6 about 2 feet long and set it up at about 20 feet. In three shots I dead centered one, and hit each end with the other two.

I then loaded a Maxi-Ball and dead centered the paint spot on the fridge. And did it two more times.

Moral: If you see me shooting Lee REAL bullets, the only safe place to watch from is another county. Maybe two counties away.:)

Yep,me too.Round ball just works better. When I had the Enfield Musketoon,it shot the round ball inside a six inch circle ,easily at fifty yards, but the the minie's they'd keyhole all over ...''well,THAT'S odd'' I says to myself.Maybe not enough powder,I figured so I added more..Got an even WIDER spread.Went back to round ball groups shrank.Weird, but true.

I have had great results with the Lee REAL bullet. Grouped just as well as a RB in my Pedersoli .45 Frontier rifle. (1-48 twist)

It's possible that the twist of the barrel isn't right for the REAL slug. I have shot them out of my CVA percussion 45 cal. pistol with good results.

You know, shooting wouldn't be near as much fun if we knew in advance what gun likes what bullet.

I've got a Browning BAR .243 that absolutely hates boattail bullets. It'll shoot MOA all day with Remington factory CoreLokts, and most of my reloads, but throw a boattail into the mix and all bets are off. And other folks that have the same gun get good results with boattails. Makes you wanna:banghead:, but in a fun way.

You are right there, experimenting is the fun part!

My Hawken's will only shoot round ball accurately. I've tried maxi-balls, ballets, minie balls, and some other cast bullets. Inside 50 yards, it'll give any other gun a I have a run for its money with patched ball.
