How much shorter would the barrel of a S12 have to be before it affects the gas system? I think mine has a 18'' bbl now.

I don't remember, but I know I saw a thread about it on the saiga 12 forum. You may try a search there. Also you might trying pming Nalioth. He is a virtual encyclopedia of AK knowledge.

Basically, any shorter than it is, and you'll start having to use gas setting 2 almost exclusively. How much shorter before setting 2 won't run what you want is going to be VERY individual gun dependent.
Really depends on how well the gas ports were aligned when your gun was assembled.
I got lucky with one of mine, it will run everything on setting one. I've shot others that have to be on 2 for anything under 1 oz or 3 drams.

if you are going to be sbsing the saiga, make sure you use a very reputable gunsmith and he will take care of those problems for you. Red Jacket Firearms in La or Tromix and there is someone else in Nevada but I cannot remember his name right now. Red Jacket will give a 5 yr warranty on his conversions. Pretty reliable stuff.
