Did you have to give a reason as to why you needed it? If so, what did you put?

Good luck with the CCW bro, especially here in Kali. You shoulda come up to Isleton a coupla years ago, Sheriff Byrd (sp?) was handing them out left and right...mainly right I guess, cuz the Left doesn't want anyone to own guns.

*Police Chief* Eugene Byrd was handing 'em out to anybody able to pass a short training course he designed. Prior to '98, a police chief could issue CCW to anybody in his county, but long-standing "gentlemen's agreements" prevented it. Byrd knew that Sheriff Craig in particular was selling permits for campaign contributions and gave that agreement the "Byrd" :D.
In '98 the legislature passed the "Gene Byrd law" limiting chiefs to issuance within their own towns.
Byrd never issued illegally, or without proper background checks, or to out-of-county residents. Craig accused him in the media of all those things in an effort to shut him down. Then-Attorney General Lungren got in on the act, and took specific illegal actions against Byrd in '96 and '97 to shut him down, backing off only under threat of lawsuit. That's one reason the California gunnies hated Lungren and allowed Davis to win by a nose in the governor's race of '98.
At peak, Byrd had 1500 permits out. Not one Byrd permitholder ever abused his carry right, which is a lot more than we can say for the corrupt idiots issued by Craig and his successor Blanas, despite their issuing far fewer permits.

Rotza Ruck, Skunkabirry.
Sincerely, hope you get your CCW license (or whatever Kali calls it) soon.
CCW reform in Ohio bit the dust after much meddling in the Ohio Senate from the FOP and Gov Booby 'flip-flop' Daft. Good bill had passed the Ohio house, but then.....Vigoro struck the Mixmaster

you go to the PD, fill out a brief form and give 3 references. They do background check, call the references, and if no one says you're over 30 and still living with Mom (see post above), they call you 2 weeks later and say come get your permit. $10 fee, good for 4 years.
God's country!

you - Skunkabilly - in the US you're an ethnic minority, man! okay maybe not in SOCAL, but as far as the USA goes - shoot! if they give you a raft of stuff go in there and play the race card big time - I don't care if the clerk you talk to happens to be a lesbian Afro-Vietnamese American, if he/she/it is a California native and liberal (as many of them are) it'll blink...just see if it wont!
I've seen my brother's wife (who is Philipino-American) do this (make 'em blink) before and never even raise her voice. Some of those folks would hemmorage if they realized she was married to an Anglo from Wisconsin! :D

I hope you make it! Well, I should say, I hope your locality sees fit to grant you the priviledge.
I don't mean to "move in on your action" or anything, but if you don't mind me asking: do you live outside city limits? If not, how did you get around the city PD to get to the Sheriff?
I want to apply for my CCW, but it's a tough call; I see the application here before me, and it all but comes out and says "No permits shall be issued to PH." Honestly, the reason most anyone would want a CCW permit is to protect themselves and loved ones, yet the application explicitly rules this out as a "good cause."
So now, I'm stuck: should I shell out a substantial amount of cash, for a permit I'm almost certain to get turned down for? Should I try and daydream up an "acceptable" cause and hope it slips by without rational scrutiny? (That just feels wrong!) And, most importantly, won't my probable initial denial lurk around in some database and serve as a de-facto reason to deny me in the future?
I'm "just" a student, I work on-campus, and usually take public transit or walk, at all kinds of weird hours. What's a mere computer nerd without political connections, cop friends, or a substantial amount of cash to do? (I SO need to escape this state, but that'd be really tough because of school.)
Then of course, there's the issue of what'd happen when the issuing authority contacted my employer. OH the fun! But I'd certainly cross that bridge when I got to it.
Please, counsel me with your wisdom, oh "VERY warm", mercaptan-enhanced, Tactical One. :)

I can't belive people are making such a big deal about this.
Just shows you where we as a nation are.
Good luck Skunk, you gonna need it in that "state" that you live in.

It isn't supposed to cost more than $20 to have your initial paperwork and "good cause" gone over. More if you pass that point, of course.
Are you dealing with a local agency charging more?

I don't want to hijack Skunk's thread; maybe we should move this to PM?
At any rate, I'm looking at at:
http://www.sdsheriff.net/mgt_serv/licensing/ccw.html and it looks as though the _initial_ application fee for serfs is about $150 ("Fees" section), but also must have completed a CCW class within 30 days of the application ("Firearms safty/training" section), which effectively tacks on the cost of a class to each application fee.
(I can certainly budget a few hundred into the app and training if I have a decent shot at having my cause "approved". I'll genuflect to that extent. Lighting piles of money afire and pushing them out to sea is not an option, though.)
Is my local SD doing something incorrectly? If so, how should I approach them?
Strategically Yours,

Thank YOU for working so hard to keep 'em honest! I see Chuck's writing in the CRPA newsletter; is the CRPA or NRA contributing any $$ to help with the work you're doing?
Blackhawk:
Forgive me, but I found that hilariously ingenuous!
Heh. There's a reason I used "incorrect", versus "wrong", "immoral", "irrational", "unconsititutional", "indecent", "insane", or anything like that. If I stroll down to the Sheriff's office and tell 'em their wrong and that this situation stinks, I doubt I'll get far. If I politely point out that their procedure is "incorrect" pursuant to Offical State Law X(y)(z) Fresh From Das Kapital, I've got half a chance.
In retrospect, my question to Jim could be more clearly phrased: "What they're doing is at odds with what you say they should be doing. You rock, and _they_ clearly don't have my best interest in mind; I like your version much more. Can you provide a citation which verifies what you claim, so that I can confront them on the issue?"
I usually take the ingenuous route by default, though. It often gets people to let their guard down when explaining to my "simple self", and I don't like flappin' my lips all that much anyhow. :D
