Received some updated info. on this new gun and round from the API List. Apparently it's been test-fired by a well-known instructor, who reports the following:It's fifty caliber, shoots bullets in the 325 to 440 gr range and yields velocities between 1600-1700 f/s. It is designed for handgun hunting. The new five-shot revolver manufactured by S&W will be on the "X" frame (larger than the N-Frame) and has a 7.5 inch barrel. We fired one at the S&W training center over the weekend, and to say it's a handful is an understatement. However, the pistol did hold up well to the pounding.

The combination (ammo and gun) will be introduced at the SHOT show next month in Orlando. We also got to see the whole line of new guns they're coming out with. Looks as if 2003 will be an interesting year for S&W.Apparently Cor-Bon will be making ammo. for this beast. Sounds interesting!

I wonder if it comes equipped with the new politically correct lock??? Wouldn't want to buck the system would we?

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DONT FIX IT!!!

There's a picture of the cartridge on the Smith & Wesson forum. It appears to be rimless, which strikes me as an odd choice. It is also very large.

If the anti's go into a fit over a .50 "Evil Sniper Rifle" they oughta go nutso over a .50 caliber "Evil Handgn." I see special training, a souped up NICS scan, I see psychological screening to see why anyone would really want such a violent and evil handgun.

Opps! Sorry. We're talking S&W here, the favorite gun manufacturer of the left. Maybe this will be the handgun of choice for the USDA Poultry Inspectors and Tactical Swat Team.

Sounds like it's the size of a Super Redhawk. Now if it only holds up under heavy use like one....

If it is rimless, why wouldn't they use the .50 AE?

The only void this gun fills is in someone's safe. There are already several fine choices that match its performance.

Nevermind, I just for the first time looked into the ballistics of the .50 AE. I now understand why they wouldn't use it.

FOR USE IN THE NEW S&W 500 MASTERPIECE REVOLVER.
It looks just like a really big L-frame, and is instantly recognizable as a Smith&Wesson sixgun,,,errr...fivegun.
It weighs 70 ounces.
The bbl is 8 3/8".
The gripframe is K/L round butt with a new design of HOGUE recoil absorbing grips.
Case length of the 500S&W cartridge is 1.625".
Cylinder length is 2.250"

CORBON did all the design work in this cartridge from stem to stern.
Bullet weights are tentatively set at 275HP, 400HP, and 440FP.
All velocities are well above 1600FPS with pressures not exceeding 50,000PSI
And no, THERE AIN'T NUTTIN OUT THERE ITS' EQUAL, NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Whew...I'm pooped...guess I'll hafta save the good stuff 'till next time guys and gals.

You guys may not want to hear this, but what is the use of a four and a half pound handgun? You can get a 45 colt lever action that weighs about five pounds. It is easier to shoot too.

Before you jump on my case, if you want it just because it's new then more power to ya.

Terry,

What about the BFR (45-70 in a revolver)? Not that I would buy one of those either.

45-70 is a dud from a short barrel. Not enough barrel length to burn powder.

"Masterpiece"? That sounds expensive. I wonder how long it will take Ruger or Taurus to produce a competing product.

Rx7 works very well in a 45/70 BFR. besides it's fun to roll a milk jug around a hill side at 200 yards with a hand gun.

I hope it comes with wheels! And a lanyard. Yet another crew-served handgun. I thought the HK MK23 had the patent on that...

hahaha! using that cartridge in a short barrel ccw gun

at short distances, even if you miss the bg, with a barrel that short the muzzle blast may set his clothes on fire... :D

Won't work for CCW Although C.R.Sam prolly has a holster and rig already for it.

Hunting All I can say is Instant Hamburger where is the Helper?

The Military already has a 105 and 155 what more could they use.

If it is rimless where are the moonclips and when will Glock be coming out the the Glock 50

S&W screwed up again and is putting it in their new 1911

Actually that depends on the powder and the bullet...Ive seen em burn entirely clean in a 7 incher...

You know it has been a year or 2 since the folks at Tompkins (britsocialists) made the infamous agreement. It has also been a while since the "agreement" went away.
SOLD, new management all that good stuff.
Time to lay off.

They are working hard to give you what you want.
Give them a fair shake. Go buy a couple hundred shares at $1.85
You might make a buck or two in the process.

Yeah, that's true. I'm drooling. I do live for hand cannons, after all. ;)

But will they sell 'em in the PRK? Might be a moot question, after all. Leastwise in this STUPID STATE!:fire: :cuss: :fire:

Ruger will wait and see if it really sells, then make a better one if history holds true in horse pistols. Although, Bill Ruger once said, paraphasing, "there is a point at which things become rediculous", in regard to larger calibers. However, he's not around. :(
