Hi all. I have a Russian Capture K98 and theres a stamp that i am clueless about. It is on the reciever and the bbl. it is a lower case "a" and is stamped underneath the serial number...
Anyone know what this stamp means?

It is the rest of the serial number.
German military serial numbering practice at the time was four digits and a letter.

Ditto; each year, the Germans would restart their serial numbers at "1", and work up as far as they could through that year. So, they would build guns 1 through 9999, and then add an "a", build "1a" through "9999a", then add a "b", build "1b" through "9999b", and so on. The following, year, they'd restart everything at "1" again. They did this for all of their production, meaning that their serial numbers aren't unique unless you also know which specific year each gun was made in, and which factory it was built at.
