Hello all! I have an older (I believe) Smith & Wesson Model 37 Airweight. No rear sight, fixed front, .38 SPL. 1.75" bbl, bright nickel with wood grips. SA/DA. The serial # is J 999454.

The gun is very tight, and still shoots well. I'm looking for any history (date of manufacture, etc) you can provide. I'm thinking about putting this gun into my CCW routine. Good idea or not?

Also, any suggestions for a set of better grips? Will the current Model 37 grips (like Uncle Mike's Boot) fit this gun?

Thanks!

All J serial number guns were made between 1969 and 1983.
It is by most standards, not an "old" S&W.
Yours was shipped in 1982.

Any J-Frame grips will fit it.

It is not any more valuable then any other modern S&W of that time frame.
And I can think of no reason not to use it for CCW if you so desire.

It would be difficult to find a better gun for the purpose.

You might consider using the grips you have and adding a Tyler T-Grip adaptor. Many folks find them very comfortable.

I've had two Models 37. Carried one for several years and finally gave it to Elder Son for a back up and off duty piece. I'm carrying the other right now. I've put Hogue Bantam stocks on two J-frames and really like them. They are about as small as any factory handle - - Back strap is exposed and the rubber only comes to the bottom of the frame. Personally, I really like having my little finger curl under the bottom of the frame - - I seem to have greater control that way.

Best of luck to you
