I once bought a pair of their "faux" ivory grips for my Taurus 85.
Installed and went out to the local range to give 'em a try...the inside (right side in firing grip) cracked on the very first round fired.
I made a wood set myself after that.

I hope that's just a freak incident... I REALLY want a pair of their black pearlite on a S&W 442.

Did they replace them?

I have the AJax Pearlite grips on two of my Ruger Vaquaro's and love them. They have both had many, many rounds put through them.

What happended to dave/hoff was a freak thing. I have used Ajax for many years and still do. I have them on 44 mag as well as 44 special, 44-40 and 45lc. Never a problem. They used to just drop in but now they required a minimal amout of fitting.

Got got a set for my HP and they cracked on the first range session.
I was very careful not to over tighten the grip screws.
Fortunately I got them from Midway and got my money back with no questions

Have AJAX imitation ivory grips on a pair of 44 mag vaqueros. They have worked just fine, shoot some full loads but mostly a lot of 44 special cowboy loads. but dont get to much cleaning fluid on them or they will melt.

From what I have seen the fit on some of them can leave a lot to be desired.

Thanks Lads ! :)

Was thinking of getting a pair of the "Pearlite" for my SBH - sorta let the ol' girl dress up a bit since she has put so many deer in the freezer for me.

Would by from Midway, of course. :)

Perfect fit on any handgun where the stocks are two panels are a problem because in the manufacturing process no two frames are exactly the same. "Back when" gunmakers would fit a pair of stocks to each frame and then serial nunber them to that frame. After the frames were blued or plated the correct stocks were put back on them.

If you want a perfect fit there are two options.

1. Order the stocks to be made slightly oversized, and then fit them yourself.

2. Send the gun to the stock-maker, and for an extra charge he or she will do the fitting. If you are buying expensive genuine pearl, stag or ivory stocks this is the best way to go.

Note that today most revolvers (excluding Single Action Army Colt's or clones) come with molded rubber grips that cover most, if not all of the handle. There is a reason for this. :uhoh:

I guess I wouldn't rule them out for a second try - as a matter of fact, I was looking at a pair of their wood laminate grip panels for the same Model 85, but the $90 price tag kind of staggered me. I spent about 10 bucks and as many hours to make my own.

I previously posted pictures of those grips in thread titled "Wood grips for Ruger Redhawk" in this section.

RKBABob-never sent 'em back. Didn't seem worth the effort/hassle. And it may have been my own fault - certainly could have tightened them up to much and caused the problem myself. When in doubt, I'm less inclined to make someone else pay for my mistakes.

The white pearlite on Dtaley's bottom Vaquero shown above could be my exact gun. There was only a relatively minor amount of fitting for mine, a simple matter.
