It was a major disappointment for me today... with all this hype about how great Benelli M4 is...

Got my new Benelli M4 (picked up 2 days ago) came with modified choke, and took it to the range, and loaded Winchester 2.3/4 inch deer slugs.

The gun fired the 1st rd beautifully, ejected the shell 5 feet away, and loaded the second rd into the chamber... but... the bolt won't return to the battery position fully. I had to pull the bolt the back and release and pull back and release 3 to 4 times before the bolt would complete return to battery. Then after firing that rd, the same thing would happen....

I tested 15 shells, with the same exact result. I took it to my gunstore gunsmith, and he tested fired buckshots, targets rds, all with the same results. The gunsmith had no clue about the problem.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Call Benelli. They will tell you why the failure is occuring, or tell you to send it back to them for repair.

You will notice a fair amount of white factory goo on the bolt tail piece and even more oozing out from where it seats. This may be causing the extra friction. I believe this should be cleaned and removed, but I'm not 100% sure.

Retro, congratulations on your new weapon! You definitely bought the best. One of the first things that the M4 (and any new gun) needs is a thorough cleaning and then a quality lube. Once this is done, break it in with at least 200 heavy loads. I used turkey loads for mine. After that, you should be good to go. Remember, use a quality lube! If you don't have the military manual, e-mail me with your e-mail and I'll send it to you. It's much better than the factory manual.

like binotti said, you have to clean that thing out and get the oil out of it. use heavy loads to make sure you work it hard early on. RG

+1 call Benelli they do have excellent customer service.

I had a Supernova and after testing several different 3.5" magnums through a benchrest had the trigger guard crack. Benelli replaced the part in under 2 weeks, very courteous.

M4s usually require cleaning completely before operating. Often there is thick grease in the recoil tube that may be causing the bolt to bind. Try cleaning it thoroughly & then do another test run. Also, they usually require a little bit of break-in time.
