If you had a "free gun" voucher to take to any custom gunmaker, what would you have built?

Mine is a 1911, specifically:
Government size
Beveled titanium-alloy frame & slide
Bobtailed
10mm
Ambi-safety
Extended slide stop
Light magwell/beveling
30 lpi on front strap, back strap, & front of triggerguard
Bobtailed Crimson Trace burlwood grips
Tritium/Fiber-Optic sights, Yellow rear, Green front
8+1 flush fit & 10+1 extended mags custom made

And of course it would have to be 100% reliable. :)

I'd guess that it would cost around $10K, but that's where the "free gun voucher" comes in handy. ;)

And if I ever had to use it in self-defense I'd hope that I got it back. :uhoh:

I was gonna say, "I have mine" until I saw your description. Game, set an match - that's mine, too! Except mine would have a 4" bbl, not 5", and would have a steel slide (but keep the Ti frame). Dangit, something else I want to get now. :( :D

It would be a .45... but with the recoil of a .22.
It would carry at least 12 rounds... in its single stack magazine.
It would have a locked breech... with the simplicity of a blowback mechanism.
All metal construction... and ultra-light, with total rust resistance.
Full length barrel... easily concealed because its so short.
A full size compact grip.

You know, somewhere between a KelTec p32 and a full size 1911. :neener:

Actually, I like a long heavy trigger pull and no safety. A S&W 642, Sig P232, P239, NAA Guardian... any of them would get my vote... but the P232 is on my Christmas list!

Interesting question, and not to gloat but I guess I already have it. (After about twenty years of planning, pining, and paying for almost what I wanted.)

Start with a pre-70 Colt Government Model in .45ACP. Why? I just like the looks of the slide lettering, to be honest. Very classic, and Colt is the original home of the 1911. The Pre-70s were the last of the old style 1911s from Colt.

Make it new in the box.

Polish feedramp for reliability and add a tighter link and pin for just a smidge of slop removal.

Trigger job with the original trigger, crisp and 4 pounds.

Add a Smith & Wesson K Frame Revolver sight. Fully adjustable, low profile. Very popular "back in the day" and still a good set-up in my opinion. Round the edges of the sight blades to make it "snag-free" for carry.

Stipple front strap for grip and add flat, stippled mainspring housing also.

Undercut triggerguard for improved grip, but very subtly so the lines of the Maestro Browning's work isn't marred.

Add a front sight night sight.

Gild the lily a bit and throw in an Ed Brown match bushing to tighten things up just a tad.

Change the grip bushings out and add a set of slim profile carry grips.

(This last mod really slims the gun down quite a bit)

Bevel mag well, sides and front to back, to improve ease of mag insertion.

Add a modern low maintenance finish that resists sweat in the muggy summertime.

This is what I did to a new in the box minus the box, 1969 production Colt. King's Gun Works added the Smith sights and link and pin and throating. Gunsmith Karl Sokol finished it up for me a couple of years ago. Karl finished it off with his Mountain Tuff finish, which is the same thing as Wilson's Armor Tuff.

Very retro and minimalist by modern standards, but I like it.

Premiuim Sauces,

It's a bit archaic, and I typo-ed the word gild, (It's gild as in coat with a gold colored metal, not guild as in a union- doh! That's what I get for drinking and posting) but here's the origin:

Inspector,

Thank you, sir. I believe it may be apocryphal, but Winston Churchill once- supposedly- said something to the effect that his tastes were simple: the best in everything.

Same with me, but with champagne tastes and a beer budget, unfortunately. Grin.

Steel frame, hefty but not cumbersome
Single stack for slimness, holding 8rds of 9mm
Elegant but comfortable grips, made of rosewood or cocobolo
Round trigger guard
Maybe some light checkering on the front and back straps
Night sights
Smooth SAO trigger
Spur hammer
Ambidextrous controls
Spare barrel, threaded
Nice leather holster, possibly a shoulder holster with a 2 mag carrier on it
mag carrier for rear of belt

Loaded with 147gr Federal HST of course.

1911

5" Bar-Sto bbl chambered in 9X23 Winchester. Fitted properly in the slide, frame, and bushing. Make the muzzle flush with the bushing.

Steel slide (chromoly or stainless) to prevent galling with frame.

Titanium alloy frame.

Good 3.5-4lb trigger.

Good quality tool steel hammer and sear.

Carry bevel on all sharp edges.

Tritium sights most likely Heine Strait 8's.

10 Good quality magazines.

Finish everything in a good water and salt resistant finish like NP3.

I would also like a matching pistol with a 4" bbl and commander sized frame.

Wow, there are some great 1911's listed here, and I would love to own any one of them, but not for daily carry.

My dream carry gun - that I would carry every day - would be more utiltarian, not have a manual safety, be lighter and slimmer.

I will soon be buying it - A Kahr P45, black frame and slide with night sights.

I really like carrying my S&W Model 19, 4" barrel. It feels solid and reassuring on the hip, and the square-butt grip seems to jump into my hand and line up for the first shot all on its own. I would change just a few things:

The balance is almost perfect, but it is just a little bit too forward-weighted. To make it perfect I would somehow remove 2-3 ounces of muzzle weight so it balances a bit further back, like a S&W Model 10.

The Jerry Miculek grips I have on there are pretty good, but they stick out about an inch from the bottom of the frame. I'd prefer a grip with the narrow, rounded feel of the Miculek but which is flush with the frame at the bottom.

Improved modern metallurgy to shore up the K-frame's forcing cone weakness would be nice, too. And while I'm wishing, a high-tech coating to protect that glossy S&W blueing from holster scratches!

I want a high polished Stainless Steel 1911 Gov chambered for 10mm with Crimson Trace wrap arounds, a large beavertail, loop hammer, lowered and flared port, Novak low sights with tritium inserts. NO ambo safety (I am right handed) Stainless 10 rd magazines (atleast 4 of them) and the only cuts/marks I want on the slide are cocking serrations at the rear. No need for front serrations. I don't need checkering any where else on the gun. I don't need names or stuff etched on my slide. Just the serrations on the rear and 10mm on the exposed part of the chamber for safety.

Ok...you said dream gun...not sure if this exists:

My dream gun would be a revolver....bigger than a NAA .22mag black widow, but smaller than a SW 642.

I have seen SW models that chamber .22 and .32, but they are practically the same size as a .38 snubbie.

I want something just a tad bigger than a NAA black widow, but is chambered in a more potent round.

Not sure about the reliability of semi-autos at this super small size. (May be a P32, NAA Guardian .32, P3AT)

I would like a 5"-barreled Match Target SIG P229R with a solid stainless steel frame and the DAK trigger system, with both .357 SIG and .40 S&W barrels fitted, tuned for robust reliability more so than accuracy. Rear sight? Bo-Mar or equivalent. Plus, a normal-dimension spare upper unit chambered in .40 S&W, so I could qual with it annually as a duty pistol. While I am a sixgunner at heart, this would be a back-up pistol for big-city police patrol. Not concealed back-up, but a longer-range fighting pistol for the "war" bag, that would share magazines with the P229 in the duty rig. A pistol for a nightmare scenario along the lines of Columbine, North Hollywood, Virginia Tech, that would continue to be a recreational tool after I retire.

SIG did market a P229 Sport, which is not far from the above ideal, but its longer upper unit was chambered for .357 SIG, at least in the examples I have seen. I need .40 for magazine interchangeability at work.

SIG does market a 5" Match Target P220, but it is in .45 ACP, and if I recall correctly, not available with the DAK action.

SIG also markets X-5 variants of the P226, which could possibly be extensively modified to work with P229 magazines, but they seem to be highly tuned and finicky target pistols; I want robust reliability, like a stock pistol.

Assuming this will not happen before I retire, it is more likely that I will have a custom 'smith like Alan Harton build me a custom single action sixgun based on something like a USFA Single Action. Exact specs to be determined later.

Hmm...Dream carry gun...

OK. Here goes:

It would be a 4'' barreled 1911-A1 with a cone barrel, and the end of the coned barrel would be a counterweight, contoured just like the slide, so that the total length of the gun wasn't longer than a standard gun. Kind of like one of the early Clark pin gun models. NOT a compensator. They're too loud. Been there, done that.

Wilson Ultralight hammer/sear
Ed Brown Memory Groove beavertail grip safety
Standard thumb safety, de-horned for carry
Bo-Mar sights, low mounted into the slide
Stippled front strap on the frame

I have it already. I have a number of Colt 1911's including my Grandfathers Commercial 1911(not A-1). My go to gun off the farm is a Colt Defender that I have had for the last 3 yrs and feeds anything I give it including lead swc's. Light - easy to carry in CCW mode and I use a El Paso Saddlery cross draw holster as I am left handed and can not get to a strong side holster while in the drivers seat of a car. I never thought I would like a pistol of this size so much. Then again this is just me!

Colt Lightweight Commander in .38 Super, with a properly supported barrel.

Coarse checkering on frontstrap

Long, flat faced trigger, breaking at 3.5 #.

Color contrasting 3 dot tritium sights. Probably green rears and red front. I'm partial to the low profile design which overhangs the rear of the slide.

Mildly extended controls. Not GI, but not the Moby Dick flippers that lots of guns come with, either.

No front serrations.

No FLGR.

An old school welded-type mag well. No S&A, no tech well hangning off the bottom, just an enlarged opening, adding no length.

Taurus pt1911 grips, or similar. Slim, but not too slim, and the checkering is SHARP.

My take would be either a wather PPS with thumb safety, or and alloy Kahr K9s/a with a thumb safety. The Springer EMP 9mm for a more reasonable $400 is up there on the list also. Oh how about the new Sig P238 in 9mm.

My dream carry gun is a GLOCK 22 or 31 with Warren Tactical sight, stippled frame, a slicked up trigger and +5 basepads on the mags. 21 rounds of .40 or .357 Sig is big medicine for a handgun. The only problem is that it is way too big to CCW- so I settle for a G27.

Hmm, how about a pistol the size of a cigarette pack that holds 20 or more rounds of 10mm and has very little recoil.

Until that comes around I will stick with my XD45 and my P3AT.

Dream Carry Pocketable: The discontinued Kel Tec P-40 with a reversable magazine release (I'm left handed)...so I had to settle for the P-11 which I carry almost every day....until I will find a screaming deal on a ultra compact Kahr in 40 S&W.

With the P-11 I'm very very close to my ideal pocket carry.

Dream Carry Full Size: A strong and trouble free EA Witness capable of digesting true 10 mm Auto loads, with ambidx safety, decocker, reversable mag relase button and with a very good Customer Service.

Alternative Dream Carry Full Size:...a SIG in 10 mm or Bersa Thunder full size in 10 mm.

For me it would be a TRUE pocket pistol chambered in .40S&W I am talking Kel-tec P3AT size or just SLIGHTLY larger to accommodate the round. The closest thing I have seen is the AMT backup in .45acp.

After that it would be a single stack M&P with crimson trace grips

And now for one to bend if not break the laws of physics and political correctness.

A suppressed pistol with a polymer frame say the size of a glock 17 but having the can built in so it didn't really add any bulk to the gun. Of course it would have to have laser grips and be discrete looking enough so if I was forced to draw it would take a trained eye to realize it was suppressed. This would be my perfect gun all around, carry, HD and Range.

A S&W 469 that shoots where I point it, and isn't all worn out. Maybe with tritium sights and a nice lightened-and-smoothed trigger.

For some money and smithing, that could actually happen. I'm just a simple guy. :)

OK, it used to be a polymer single-stack striker-fired ultra-thin 9mm, but there are a few out there and none appeal to me. So I'll go with ultra-thin (less than 1" at widest part of the grip) single-stack, all-metal, DA/SA, compact 9mm. Along the lines of the Walther PPS but metal, with an exposed hammer. 7+1 capacity.

I'd trade off a little accuracy for a lot of concealability coupled with power. I like the Glock 29 for such a thing. I'd knock off a little recoil and throw an EFK Firedragon recoil spring, add "Speed Sights" for faster target acquistion and a Pearce Grip extender for better control. Of course if you don't mind the recoil, or would rather drop in a .357 Sig or .40 S&W barrel, and feel like paying out the nose for a Lasermax You could do that too. As far as accuracy goes I figure if the guy I need to shoot is too far away then he's far enough away for me to get myself and those I love out of harms way and someplace safe.

Bob-tailed polymer-frame Commander-length 1911 in 9mm with reliable, flush-fitting 10-rd magazines. Melonited slide with black oxide finish, no grip safety provision (just a slight beavertail), frame slenderized like the Gunsite Gunsmithy used to do it but as part of the molding of the frame, frame with molded-in texturing like that of a Browning BDM, plain black "ledge_-type (i.e. 10-8, YoBo, Heinie Ledge, etc.) rear sight, self-illuminated front fiber optic sight that would stay in forever and not work it's way out...

That about does it.

Mine is a Kimber pro carry. I love the gun, but never shot one which makes me hesitate. I have a full size but never shot a compact 1911.

I had a ProCarry II along with my Classic Royal II. The Pro was about as accurate with just a bit more muzzle flip due to the lighter alloy frame. Comfortable to carry though. I ended up replacing the Pro with my dream gun...
