View Full Version : Silencer / Suppressor wait period questions...

So the way I understand it, when buying a suppressor...

- You pay for it (and the dealer basically holds it in escrow)
- You submit the paperwork, suppressor serial #, and your $200
- You wait current queue time (60-90 days) for your stamp to come back
- After approved, you return to your dealer and pick up your newly legal suppressor

Is this correct? I'm having a hard time buying into this idea. In today's economy, what happens if the dealer closes up shop sometime during that 2-3 month wait period? At that point, you'd lose the money you paid for the suppressor, and possibly the tax money since it would be tied to that can....
Am I missing something?

Unfortunately, I don't have any dealer that I find reputable enough to return my money if this happened, nor do I know of any that may not just happen to go bankrupt in the next 3 months. Purchasing one over the internet also adds even one more step into the chain.

By the way, I'm in Las Vegas, and I've already seen one major player close up shop in the last couple of months (not to mention the other mainstream business closing up shop as well).

What's everybody else doing? I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way (unless I am way off base of course).

Yep, thats the way it works and the times are about right. If the dealer goes belly up his license is still in effect for the duration of the licensing year. He may loose his store but we are talking about tightly regulated items. You think he just closes up and goes away? No. You still get the item when it is approved. Other wise the ATF deals with him. There are several very successful stores down there. Look around some more.

The silencer will be yours as long as you paid for it and the ATF approves your form 4. If the dealer goes out of business and does not renew his FFL/SOT and he still has your silencer, he has to transfer it to another dealer or legally dispose of it. A tax free transfer to another dealer would be the easiest for him to do, then you just get it from the other dealer.

The ATF refunds any tax paid for transfers not approved or that do not take place.

I avoid all this by making my own silencers instead of buying them. :)

That's really how it works. It sucks, but it's the law.

Which shops are you referring to? There are several here in town that are class 3 dealers.
