I saw the Sig 556 pistol at Cabela's the other day when I headed up there with a friend. After checking it out, I sort of fell in love with it, except for the $1699 price tag. Is this over priced? Are there any other assault rifle/pistols similar to this one to consider that might be easier on the wallet?

PLR-16s go for around $600 at their priciest. You can probably find them for less than $500
They're also much more lightweight than the 556 pistol.
BUT, if the 556 is what you fell in love with, then it's the one you fell in love with. Don't go buying the PLR off of gunbroker until you've handled one for yourself.
You might absolutely HATE the PLR for all any of us know (I think it feels decidedly flimsy compared to the 556 pistol), and this is obviously more a 'cool gun that I like' kind of buy more than it is for any practical reason.
So, if you find a PLR-16, check it out. If you like it as much as the 556, go for it.
If you DON'T, saving up for the 556 might be a better way to go.

If you have that kind of cash burning a hole in your pocket and are deeply in love then by all means go for it. For me it seems like a bunch of money for a toy with no practical application. It probably would be the coolest toy on the line tho.

Olympic Arms and Bushmaster also have a 223 pistol - not sure, at the moment, of the pricing

Yes that is over priced. A dealer over in Tampa had them for $1400 a few weeks ago (of course I missed it).
Don't forget gents, this Sig is a piston system and unlike the AR does not require a recoil spring tube.
I did buy a Spike's Tactical AR pistol a few months ago that I converted to a piston system using the Adam's Arms system. It is awesome. But it cost me just as much as the Sig setup by the time I was done. Plus the AR still has the recoil tube.
I payed $1600 OTD for the Sig 556 rifle version and felt clubed, raped and sodomized, but had to prepare for the Obinination's Coronation!

keltec vs. sig?
for the money i'd go w/ a keltec, but Sig will ALWAYS have a better resale value.

Yeah, i have been reading over and over again how happy people are with their PLR16's, and how accurate they are. Sure its probably not as nice as the sig, but either way they are BOTH impractical...so if it were me i would go with the kel-tec. Besides, in my opinion it looks just as cool...

The Sig is insanely heavy for the caliber.

I would go with 3 PLR-16's and a case of ammo, for the same price.
