I am about a week away from finaly getting my Class A CC so I figured it may be time to put a little thought into how I would like to carry.

What's your preferred carry method and why?

Mexican carry with a good belt.
I also like INW holsters and vertical shoulder holsters. That's right VERTICAL.

Inside the waist holster,...easier concealment. Vertical shoulder holsters
(+1, MAK) are great, too...all about preference. Fobus paddle holsters
are great, too. Winter time opens up more options, with more clothing...

If you "mexican carry" use a holster made just for that. Of course it won't be "mexican carry" then, but "appendix carry"...Not a bad way to carry. Especially in the winter...

Milt Sparks #Axiom - OWB with "FBI Cant" i.e. muzzle a few degrees rearward... at 3:30 which some may refer to as the appendix position.

On one thread somebody refered to carrying IWB in the "Appendix" position
but was referring to approx. 2:00 with the muzzle pointing at well you figure it out.... they need to study anatomy, front right is liver sheeish...

FYI - the #Axiom has belt loops with two snaps each. The lower snap is
a regular snap, the upper is directional so it has to be aligned for on/off -the
design makes it easy to remove in case you have to go somewhere where carrying is not an option. I also have a Milt SParks IWB single magazine
carrier the inside portion goes up far enough to shield the magazine from
digging into the body.

THe #Axiom is for a full size 1911, I cover it with a 'fishing type' multi-pocket vest I wear a lot, or else a windbreaker/sport coat.

Go look again BlindJustice. Appendix carry is on the right side and the appendix is also on the right side about 2:00 waist high. And properly carried in a holster at that position causes no more danger then any other form of carry. It's when they carry "mexican style" or a Glock that they get into trouble with that position.

I carry a S&W Mod 19-5 2 1/2" in that IWB Appendix 2:00 position and have for years. The trick (if there is one) is to keep your booger hook off the trigger when drawing and reholstering, which your supposed to do anyway no matter where you wear your holster...

Same as BlindJustice for my 1911s:

OWB with "FBI Cant" i.e. muzzle a few degrees rearward...at 3:30...

For my Glocks I carry Fobus at 3:00. I also have an ankle holster for the G26.

As to the why...simply comfortable positions, and the pistols are readily accessible.

I'm really anal about carrying the same way all the time. ( I also only carry one of two guns) Galco Summer Comfort IWB right behind the seam of the pant. ( right over the Illiac crest). That's the only way I carry and I dress around it.

I don't think I've seen anyone say they use a Shoulder Holster. Is there any reason why? It seems this may be the most comfortable way to carry in the winter.

November 9, 2008, 01:09 PM
Shoulder rigs take more time to put on and take off, and unless they're very well made and fitted, they can get very uncomfortable, very quickly. I find that OWB leather belt holsters are cheaper, more comfortable, provide for a faster draw, and are less conspicuous, with or without a cover garment.

I know what you mean about untucked shirts, but even without a purpose designed "tuckable" holster, you can still tuck your shirt in without looking too terribly obvious.

Other than for actual exercise, I NEVER wear an untucked shirt, since I think it looks slovenly. I have Don Hume clip on IWB holsters for my S&W 3" Model 65, Glock 19, and full sized M1911s (also fits the BHP). I tuck my shirt in as much as I can, and blouse the small part remaining underneath. It's still unobtrusive. People who don't know I carry have no idea I'm wearing a full sized firearm. No part of the gun is visible, or obviously outlined, and the only thing that is visible is the subdued clip for the holster.

Of course Ohio is an open carry state. "Printing" doesn't even exist as a legal concept. Even some place where it did, the way I carry could only be a problem if somebody was just LOOKING for something to hassle you about.

I carry IWB 90% of the time. My summer carry is a S&W J frame. In colder weather it's a usually snub Ruger security six .357. Both are carried somewhere around 3 oclock.

I'm a Floridian so clothing is usually optional down here. I find a Seecamp LWS32 in my right front pocket (DeSantis Nemesis holster) works great for me!

Anyone have good suggestions for decent ankle holsters? How about something that works in the small of your back?

When I was a bit younger and weighed 20 less pounds, I really liked the Bianchi Belly Band. I carried a S&W 640 hammerless revolver or a Walther PPK/S .380 auto in it. I could draw from it under my shirt almost as fast as what I use now - A high ride pancake holster with a matching strong belt.
You can hide and carry comfortably almost any handgun the size of a 5" 1911 or smaller in the RIGHT holster.

As for the shoulder holster thing, I'll have to agree with the other guys about getting uncomfortable quick. The looks of a shoulder holster is deceiving about the comfort thing. I've tried alot of them, and I think that the only thing usable for me might be one of the Galco Miami Classic shoulder rigs or the DeSantis Jackass rigs that are pretty much the same thing.

I am very comfortable carrying my XD9(primary carry) in the holster that came with it. OWB is very comfortable for me, and in my opinion allows faster access to the weapon. I have a Galco Skyops for my Defender, which allows very good concealability, even to the point of being able to tuck my shirt in, but it is an absolute monter to re-holster a gun in. Every time I draw, I have to un-do everthing to get the Defender back in.

Does the XD holster actually count as concealed?

I was looking at getting an XD45 before too much time passes, but I didn't know if I'd find the hoster useful in day-to-day situations (looks like it would be good if I find somewhere to shoot IDPA or something though).

Strong side IWB 4:30-5:00, clipped with an accessory clip, no holster.

A distant second is pocket carry in a round cut Mika pocket holster.

I will sometimes do 4:30 in an Uncle Mike's belt holster, strong side, if I'm wearing a heavy coat and perhaps driving a long distance.

When I tote my 1911 .45 ACP's (which is MOST of the time), I prefer
the OWB carry in a real leather, open top, compact undercover rig
from Kirkpatrick Leather of Laredo, Texas. Likewise, when I decide
to carry one of several Smith & Wesson 5-shot snub-nose revolver's;
I use a soon too be 33 year old Bianchi model 6 IWB. Both, the 1911's
and the S&W revolver's are carried between the 3:30-4 o'clock position.

I carry a G19 in a Galco Walkabout.
http://www.holsters4guns.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/WLK224-s.jpg

It is a clip on IWB vertical holster with a spare mag pocket directly in front of the gun. I like it because I can easily and quickly rearm/disarm if I'm going into areas that are gun free (court for example). I also throw a Galco mag pocket holster for another spare G19 mag in the front pocket, although this does print in thinner dress pants.

I dislike a lack of forward cant, but it is a trade off for having a spare mag there. There is also a lack of strong retention method, but that doesn't concern me greatly.

In casual dress it is easy to conceal, just a un-tucked cover shirt is required. More formal wear requires a coat or some sort of formalish vest. Yes I've been told three piece suits are out of style - I don't much care:neener:

I always carry using a OWB leather open top holster at 4:00 on my hip, with a mag pouch at 9:00. The only exception to this is when I carry my S&W 642, which has been carried in different pockets depending on what I'm wearing at the time.

As for shoulder holsters, they do have their place in concealed carry, but not for me. I've tried a quality leather rig before and I find them hard to draw from, and I always had to wear a jacket that was partially zipped - something I don't favor even when it's gross out as Washington weather is known to be. I would favor one for carrying during long road trips or to slip on to investigate the bump in the night, but otherwise find them useless for daily concealed carry. To each their own.

If I can offer any advice I've learned over the years, it's this: Buy the best holster you can afford and use a belt designed for carrying a gun. This will help in support and comfort, and it will save you in the long run of buying and trying different things only to end up with 'the box of holsters' which sits in a closet collecting dust.

backup = appendix iwb or jacket pocket

remember that if you get a soft iwb holster that it might be difficult to reholster the weapon after a draw.

Since I haven't found a good holster yet, I actually use my belt, outside my pants, to hold my pistol at 2 o'clock, angled forward. Works well for me, but digs at my hip when I'm driving.

If I'm wearing heavier clothing, small of the back is a little more comfortable.
