Noticed these on Samco's site for between $119 and $129.
Wondered if anyone else has seen or purchased one.
If so, your impressions: can they shoot sub 1.5" groups scoped with ammo of their preference? From the sounds of it they appear to be pretty decent. If good, may purchase two, and lay in couple hundred rounds each.
My use of them would be to clean. sight in, and lay in couple hundred rounds 150 softpoint and same in ball for each, use one as truck gun. Other as designated "Homeland Defense" rifle
Possible then purchase a CZ 550 or Wally world Weatherby Vanguard to scope in same caliber.
Other possibility CZ527 short action in 7.62x39 , 223

As far as I know (and I may be wrong) "Guardia Civil" Mausers are converted small-ring Spanish M1916's, and firing .308 in them is hazardous to one's health. :uhoh:

I am rather confused on the issue myself.
However, I think that they are meant to handle the NATO load. Or something to that effect. I wouldn't put a lot, if any, .308 through these.
I think there are much better things out there for the price. I'm very seldom a fan of conversions. Especially when they are done on older military rifles by unknown gunsmiths.
My 2 cents.

I'd be careful. IIRC, I read that these conversions were rated to handle only the 7.62 CETME load which was somewhat milder than the 7.62 NATO although the two are dimensionally similar.

Not sure if these are the same rifle, but SAMCO or someone sent a couple of small-ring Mausers chambered in .308 Winchester to H.P. White Labs, up in Street, Maryland. H.P. White tested them and pronounced them same to use with factory ammunition.
Here's the article - it was actually G&A who paid for the testing. http://www.samcoglobal.com/article.html
I've visited H.P. White Labs, and if they say something is safe to fire, you can pretty well take it to the bank. Still, I'd avoid any really hot loads.

I bought one of these at a show for $89. Mint bore, nice metal.
My contractor brother in law had painted my hose and refused to accept payment. He had been wanting a rifle and I was the only relative who knew anything about guns.
So I scoped it, restocked with a nice figured Fajen stock, glass bedded, put in a Dayton Traister trigger and Buehler safety, oil-finished and checkered with a nice fleur-de-lis pattern, put on a recoil pad. Reshaped the trigger bow to a slimmer and more graceful line, then reblued. Then worked up a handload. Presented him with a custom rifle and case, with 2 boxes each of custom target, plinking, and hunting loads. Man, it was hard to let that rifle go.
Best performance I got in the limited load developing time I had was 1-1/2" at 100 yd benched. Never had any problems, but never pushed the envelope, and never used milsurp ammo.

Yeah, that the small-ring 1916 Spanish mausers are unsafe in .308 is a gun-board rumor that just plain won't die. I remember seeing people arguing about it in Usenet on rec.guns way back when the Internet was text-only through a telnet session, LOL.
I guess it's travelled so much and been around so long that people accept it as gospel. I can't get to the Samco site from work, but IIRC the H.P. White labs testing the 1916's found they finally failed at either 2x or 3x SAMMI spec for .308.
That's one hell of an overcharge. Since 7.62 NATO is on average lower loaded than most all .308 commercial, a diet of milsurp ammo ought to be just fine.

I bought one from a friend who wanted to ditch it some years back. I'd heard all the rumors about 7.62 CETME and 7.2 NATO and .308 Win. I decided to do my own test.
The rifle was thoroughly disassembled and cleaned, checked with a go/no go gauge for 7.62 NATO; relubed and reassembled.
I fixed it into a B&D Workmate and put a 30 foot lanyard on the trigger after loading 5 rounds of Israeli 7.62 NATO. For each of the first 3 rounds it required a cheater pipe to manipulate the bolt. I decided to discontinue testing after the third round fired. Brass looked normal and miked out to specifications.
I traded the rifle within the month. Your mileage will most certainly vary.
Great idea, nice handy rifle. I was just a little too leery of it.
Regards,
Rabbit.
