As the title says, I've got a 625-8. Was just checking function when things went south. The action acted like it was locked up. I was able to get the sideplate off and a piece fell out that I was not expecting to see come out. :what:
Tried to find an exploded view to get the terminology right for the part, but haven't found one yet.
It's the piece that attaches the main spring to the hammer.
This raises several questions. First can someone tell me the name and perhaps part number for this part?
Second, it would be any easy fix for me but I bought the gun new. Should I send it back and let them fix it or do it myself?
Is the part the same for K, L & N frames? If so, I'll probably buy a couple of extras.
Anybody else had this happen?
The gun has not been abused, low round count and mostly light plinking lead loads. Nothing hot.

The part is called the "stirrup." Your 625-8 has, I believe, MIM parts. The MIM stirrup is: P/N 216710000 STIRRUP (USE WITH MIM HAMMER ONLY).

To reassemble, the stirrup must be vertical with the beveled side facing aft. The mainspring hooks to the little T formed at the top of the stirrup. The stirrup slides into the rounded slot on the hammer. There is a flat portion that is lined up with the stirrup vertical.

The stirrup is pinned to the hammer on most S&W revolvers, but the one that fits in a slot turns up on some 625s, 325s and 329s. Apparently your gun was assembled on Friday afternoon, or Monday morning. When properly installed, it won't come loose.

The forged hammer guns have the pinned stirrup. The MIM hammers have the separate piece stirrup. I believe the 625-8 comes with MIM parts.

You are correct. The older models had the stirrup pinned to the hammer.
This is a 625-8 = newer model.
I will call their customer service department and see what happens from there.

This is very simple to re-install. Just orient the part as Clem suggested and tighten your mainspring.
While you are in there do not let the firing pin come apart. Most everything else will keep it's place.
