First day of rabbit season was out at daybreak run 5 rabbits. I don't shoot rabbits on the jump I let the beagles bring them back around 2 went straight to a hole 1 was out of range 1 is in the fridge and I missed one. I get busy listening to my dogs and forget to get ready.
90% of the rabbits that circle are males

How's about some photos of the Beagles? I have two females, I'm sure they'd LOVE the chance to chase some rabbits. Alas, they're just my house doggies.

Had the dogs out this morning for a short while. Run three rabbits, saw two. killed one saved one for seed. My 28 gauge H&R single shot is about the perfect rabbit gun for my hunting style:D

Thanks for the photos, I LOVE Beagles! My favorite dogs of all. I didn't really care for dogs all that much, until we got our first Beagle, now I'd like to have half a dozen of them.
Ours are Annie and Coco, Annie is the older 15", Coco is the young 13". I really wish I knew a place to let them hunt or at least chase some bunnies. The bunnies in our neighborhood just drive them nuts when we go for walks.

When I was 12 I saved some money and bought a beagle from my Uncles father in law for $50. Best $50 a boy can spend in my opinion! We have a farm and all the neighbors let me hunt their places too, I never once had to put one of those dogs in a vehicle to go hunting and always had alot of rabbits!
I had a rough childhood in the winter time; typical Saturday I bowhunted in the morning, came in and ate breakfast, went rabbit hunting, then went back out with my bow around 2 or so in the afternoon. Sundays involved church in the morning, dinner, rabbits with dad then bowhunted.

Great little Beagle a friend of mine had for many years, biggest baby in the world but she was terror to the bunnies.
She went mostly blind as she aged but she was still plenty fast when I got to see one of the rarest hings I have ever seen in the hunting field.
Rabbit took off with 'Diane' hot on his trail, could here her barking on the other side of the hill, in hot pursuit. As they came around the hillside above us she was too close to the Rabbit to risk shooting.
As they reached a point directly above us on the (steep) hill, she caight up with the Rabbit, nose up his butt, tripped him up, and then ran over him, tripped herself in the process and they both came rolling butt over teakettle down the hill to land at our feet.
Hard to tell which was looking the more surprised and confused, the dog or the Rabbit!
We were laughing too hard to worry about shooting anything so Mr. Bunny got away, with a heck of a story to tell his Grandchildren some day!
That was over 40 years ago and I can still see those two rolling down the hill like it was yesterday.
Good post, Thanks for the memory!
Regards,
:)

I am on my 4th beagle, mostly from the pound. I don't hunt, so they are house dogs, but they are great pets.
A guy I work with raises beagles with his dad. They currently have about 30.
Current beagle Wilma is offended that a rabbit is living under the bushes in front of the deck. She really wants to get up close and personal with Mr. rabbit and explain her thinking regarding his living arrangements. She also "likes" squirrels, and has chased several chipmunks into the downspout. So far she has just one kill I know of, a bird.

What? You have a beagle and you don't take it hunting? Heresy! I'm notifying the Animal Police right now. Talk about animal abuse...:D

I have taken her to the dog park a number of times. Once in a while a squirrel is foolish enough to come down out of a tree. Wilma is quite vocal about her desire to eat them while chasing them to the next tree. So far she has not managed to get one, but has come very close.
Wilma likes to sleep on me when I am in my recliner too.
Woofie, was a clever hunter who despite advanced arthritis and two ACL surgeries was able to dispatch a rabbit in the yard when she was 12 I think, and barely able to walk, much less chase anything. She also dispatched various other critters in her lifetime. She liked to lay on her back in front of a fan, often vocalizing her desire to have the fan turned on if it happened to be off.
Sam and Fred used to catch mice in the yard and leave them on the front steps for me. When I would come home they would be sitting there so proud.

plumberroy,
GRIN!
Thank you for a great original post, and thread. Oh you and I are on the same page with single shot 28 ga shotguns, Old Hickory paring knife, or just a SAK Vic Soldier , or the classic Case Barehead Slimline Trapper to clean wabbits!
Everyone,
Thank you for sharing your Beagles!. Beagles are so funny, and so much fun to listen to, and watch while wabbit hunting.
Especially in the snow.
