So I bought a "tactical" sling and adaptor for my AR. How do I remove the locking nut on the tube? Is it safe to use pliers? It looks like it was designed for some special tool.

Yes, there is a special tool designed to unscrew the castle nut

You need one of these:

^^^DO NOT USE!

I had one of those and it was garbage. The little nub that goes into the notch on the castle nut snapped right off.

Spend the extra $3 on one of these: http://www.cactustactical.com/osc/carbine-stock-wrench-p-76.html

It grabs the castle nut in 3 places instead of one.

Good point. I'd go with that one also.
