Savage rifles will give you the best bang for the buck... Model 110 or 111 for hunting, or Model 12 for target.

I picked up a Remington 700 in 308 last year used for 400, really great gun.

I already own a 700 in .270, guess a good choice would be another 700 in the .308.

700 in .308 is fantastic. Yes, ... if you can get it, definitely do.

Remington 700 SPS "Tactical"...about $520.00 in my area, Hoage rubber coated stock, and dual pillar bedded heavy-barreled action.

Do you have a budget in mind?

Jeffery's Bolt Action Magazine Rifle (http://www.jroberts-gunmakers.co.uk/makers/wjj.htm) is available in .308 Winchester, and Rigby's African Express Bolt Rifle (http://www.johnrigbyandco.com/html/AfricanExpressBoltRifle.html) can be special-ordered in that calibre. They are certainly not cheap, but the quality cannot be surpassed, and of course you get a custom-fitted stock. Enjoy!
