One handed shooting

I bought a new J-frame last week that I have been wanting to try out, but seem to have have injured the rotator cuff in my left shoulder (I'm right handed). Really wanting to try out my new pistol and not able to use my usual grip, I decided to try some single handed, strong hand only shooting. Not as bad as I thought. The biggest problem that I had, other than thrying to hang my target one handed, was a little too loose of a hold and the cylinder release hitting the knuckle of my thumb.

Below is the result of 45 rounds at 5 yards.

One hand is all that's really needed as your target shows.

When I was a young man in the late 60's the articles in the gun magazines where just beginning to talk about using 2 hands to shoot a hand gun as only untrained women and sissies would use such a hold prior to that.

You can shoot quite well with one hand as demonstrated by Bullseye shooters and other target sports that only allow a one handed hold. The old guy at the range everyone called the coach would say its called a "hand gun" not a "hands gun" when asked if a 2 handed hold was OK. He had a bunch of shooting medals in his box to show his expertise.

Given a choice, I'll always use both. But I do a lot of practicing 'strong' and 'weak' hand only because it's my understanding from those who've been there that, when Bad Things happen, one often doesn't get to choose.

I think 30-50% of your practice should be one-handed. There are a variety of reasons why you might not have both hands free at a given moment.
