Long ago we were told in an armorer's segment of an instructor's class that dry firing an 870 in cold weather could bust the firing pin.
I've seen this happen.
Once.
I do not regard it as a major problem.

I think if you dry fire an 870 too much you can break the tip of the firing pin, but if you get some snap caps you can dry fire until your heart's content.
