Wow...I just discovered these things, and they look VERY cool (well, they look butt-ugly, but the concept is really cool). Does anyone know anything about 'em? Do they work well? More to the point, are they available anywhere? I know they're out of production, but does anyone know of any for sale? I looked on the "big 3" auction sites, and I can't find any there...

No, not cowboy shooting. I don't know what it 'SASS' stands for, but the things are rifle-caliber slide replacements for 1911s.

I think it's "Springfield Armory Single Shot", kinda like the old Pachmayr Dominator conversion.

I haven't seen any in years. And when I was looking a decade ago there weren't many around then.

Maybe check Shotgun News and Gun List.

Always wanted an SASS conversion in .308WIN for a spare 1911 frame but never reached the top of my list and now it is history (for a number of yers now). Might also want to search for Clerke's Xtender. Same concept but also out of production. A little better looking.

Had one in 223 for a number of years. It seemed very unwieldy with its 15 in. barrel. Finally put a short Harris bipod and a Tasco red dot on it. Mostly used it as a conversation piece at the range. With Black Hills 55 grain soft points it would blow humungous holes in 3/8 steel plate.
Sheriffs Officer who shot there got pissed at me because I was letting the Gang Bangers who used to practice for there drive bys, shoot it. Asked me "what was I trying to prove" can't say I blame him, those holes it was making in that 3/8 plate would make anybody nervous!

I got one. Two actually. And three barrels, in .243, .308, and .358. Sadly, they are discontinued, as Hand Rifles have a very limited market.

I write about 'em a bunch, here and there. I'll be back to answer specifics a bit later, gotta go work.

I would heartily suggest a search with the parameters "Springfield Armory S.A.S.S." That oughta pull up everything I've ever said about 'em, which is a pile.

"I'll be back."
