i was wondering just how many jobs in the us are in the gun industry

counting dealers
ammo makers
gun makers
importers

mag makers
stock makers
and companies that make accessories

it has to be in the millions

If your thinking the gov. will leave this thriving bastion of capitalizm alone think about what Dear Leader said about bankrupting the coal industry.

These types of numbers are highly unreliable and are basically a guess because it all depends on how far you extend it. Do you just count people who are employed by gun stores, gun and ammo manufacturers? Or do you count accessories and apparel manufacturers, people who work at lodges, Walmart employees, etc.

in this case, I think a little padding of the numbers is ok. I thought about this while arguing w/ a lefty immediately after the election.

Well, not very long at all since one of the mods floated a similar question.
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=401436

12,735 directly.
Assuming you're talking domestic only.

Add retailers, distributors, suppliers and I'd conjecture you're still well short of "millions". The 30,000 floated in the previous thread seems more reasonable. Still, that's a pretty big number.

But it'd take some epic padding to get that into the "millions".

wel lets just say there are 75k dealers assuming an average of 5 employees( which I have no doubt is very high.) thats still only. 375k

Best guess is 500k tops, but realistly more like 350k.

There's probably a number of those FFLs assigned to pawn shops, big boxes and multi-line outlets that wouldn't be materially impacted by the FFL going away.

30,000 still seems realistic.

Regardless, no amount of stretching or fluffing is going to get it to "millions".

We've probably got some historic data if we could ferret it out: after GCA '68 went into effect, how many were layed off at Montgomery Wards and Sears as a result of dropping firearms?

Retailers are tough, but you want
NAICS 332992 for ammo manufacturers (2006:9074)
NAICS 332994 for firearms manufacurers (2006:9758)
NAICS 423910 for sporting goods wholesalers - for 2002 there were about 52 K employees, but that includes EVERYBODY, not just firearms/ammunition

Also SIC 3484 might be useful.

getffl.com says "FFL EZ Find has 59497 FFL licensed dealers on file!"

But "millions" of employees looks very doubtful.
