How about in a suitcase?
Since the Valuejet 'disaster' many years ago, Part 121 etc planes have had dual-channel smoke/heat detectors in the cargo compartments. They often carry Hazmat, under very restricted conditions.
The main prohibition is toxic gas.

Anyway, can you check 500-700 rounds in a suitcase?
Hunters ship ammo in certain quantities, but I've never hunted.
It would be a shame to find a good deal when out of town, then have to pay for shipping costs.

I believe the maximum is 11 pounds (5 kilos).

Check with you air carrier. Everybody does it a little differently. Then I would print out their policy for when you arrive at the counter and the clerk doesn't know airline policy.
