I believe they are related to the Loons. Ugly lookin' suckers that eat 2-3lbs of live fish a day. They are protected here in Wisconsin, but because of their exploding population and the concern they are partly responsible for the perch decline in the Great Lakes, a season has been considered.

Taste bad? dunno........but I have heard from duck hunters from Illinois that hunt Northern Wisconsin that they taste a lot like Eagle.

They are so efficient at catching fish the Japanese have traditionally used them for fishng. A ring around the bird's neck to prevent swallowing of fish and birds trained to return with fish to the fisherman's boat.

They are also efficient at converting live fish to copious amounts of feces and thus do not exactly endear themselves around marinas and private docks.

only eat puddle ducks. deep divers like cormys eat way to much live fish or shell. they taste like a duck that has eaten a skunk

Cormorants are the most primitive of birds. They have no oil on their feathers and this allows them to dive for fish. However, the drawback of this is they become waterlogged and would drown unless they dry off their feathers every so often. That's why you see them standing on tree limbs with their wings extended in the sun.
I've never heard of anyone eating them.

I suspect that a cormorant would taste just a tad worse then a crow. And if you think cormorants are ugly, take a peak at the anhingas.

I shot one once by accident because a blinding morning sun was right behind it. However, it wasn't legal, so I had to throw it back.

We take a wrist rocket with us when we go fishing for warm water fish. We shoot rocks at the Cormorants that come around our bobbers. Only hit one in about 3-4 years but it is a hoot to make them dive and leave. :uhoh:
Some woman had a fit once and called the Fish Cops on us. The Fish cops explained just how many fish each bird feasted on each day and said that if we could kill a few they wouldn't pay any attention. Kinda took the wind out of her sails.:neener:
