In Oregon, a Clackamas County sheriff's deputy who was shot in the face last week remains in critical condition after undergoing surgery to reduce swelling in his brain, hospital officials said.

Sgt. Damon Coates underwent the surgery Saturday and was taking medication to prevent further swelling, according to a nursing supervisor.

Nick Teixeira, a Rex Putnam High School freshman, allegedly shot Coates with a high-caliber handgun on Thursday as Coates and three partners tried to take him from his home for a mental evaluation.

Another officer returned fire, hitting Teixeira in the chest. Deputies arrested Teixeira on charges of attempted aggravated murder and first-degree assault.

Teixeira is in serious condition at Doernbecher Children's Hospital. He was visited briefly yesterday morning by his parents and grandparents, the first time he's been allowed to see them since the shooting.

Teixeira requested to see them, said Detective Jim Strovink, a Clackamas County sheriff's office spokesman. Teixeira is officially in police custody and is under police guard.

In Oregon, a Clackamas County Sheriff's deputy is in critical condition after getting shot in the face while patting down a 15-year-old boy. Another deputy returned fire, hitting the boy in the chest.

42-year-old Deputy Damon Coates was flown to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center. 15-year-old Nick Teixeira is listed in critical condition at OHSU Hospital.

Four deputies had been called to the boy's house because of a domestic disturbance.

The person who placed the 911 call at about 7:30 p.m. said the boy was suffering from "mental issues," said Deputy Angela Blanchard, the sheriff's department spokeswoman.

Blanchard said she didn't believe Coates was trying to arrest the boy. "I think he was just trying to straighten out the situation," Blanchard said.

Neighbors said the boy's parents were outside the house, urging their son to calm down when police arrived. Screaming could be heard from blocks away.

Charles Brown, who lives nearby, told The Oregonian that the boy had difficulties recently.

"He isn't a problem by any means, but he was having problems with the mom's boyfriend," Brown said. "They weren't getting along."

Neighbor Herb Fee, who lives across the street, said the boy's mother was in shock after the shooting.

"They wouldn't let her go back into the house to get clothes, so I gave her one of my shirts to wear," he said. "I gave her some hot chocolate, and she drank it all."

Coates' father-in-law, Lou Beres, told reporters at the hospital that his son-in-law had been shot through the jaw and the bullet traveled up toward an eye.

"It looks like he's got a good chance of making it," he said. "Let's hope and pray."

Police officers from across the Portland area gathered at Emanuel throughout the night, keeping vigil for the popular officer.

The more I read this story, there is one question that comes up over and over. Where did the gun come from? Believe now that the officer was shot with his own gun and those in the know are withholding that information to make it sound like boy with gun shoots cop. My theory.
